Alex Bregman has struggled with his form this year. On Sunday, the third baseman went 0-for-5 against the San Francisco Giants. Following the game, the player did not mince words regarding his form and expressed that he had been “terrible” so far.

Last year, Bregman signed a 3-year, $120 million deal with the Boston Red Sox. The acquisition of the 3-time All-Star was seen as a major signing by the Red Sox.

There was some trouble in the clubhouse with his signing. Rafael Devers would initially refuse to give up his 3rd base spot. In the end, the Red Sox ended up trading the superstar to the Giants.

Bregman finished the year with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs while batting with a .273 average. However, after the season, he opted out of his deal and became a free agent once again.

The American international then joined the Chicago Cubs. The NL Central team, which missed out on him in 2025, signed him on a 5-year, $175 million deal. With the loss of Kyle Tucker, the signing of Bregman excited the Cubs fans.

The former Houston Astros star, though, has not lived up to the expectations. In 65 games this season, Bregman has hit just 5 home runs and has 19 RBIs with a .243 batting average.

On Sunday, he went hitless in 5 at-bats while striking out once. The Cubs suffered a 2-1 loss after extra innings and dropped the series. While speaking with the reporters, he got real about his performance and took blame for the loss.

I’ve been terrible. I need to play better.

Alex Bregman told the reporters

Bregman then claimed that he had been “god awful” this season and had not executed at all this campaign.

I haven’t executed all year. Runners in scoring position, I’ve been god awful.

Alex Bregman added

At the moment, he leads the MLB in runners left on base at 143. This slump of him as seen the team struggle with their offense. If not for their 2 walk-off wins last week, the Cubs would have been on a 12-game losing run at home.

The Cubs have been on a mixed run of form as of late. After going on 2 separate 10-game winning streaks in April and May, the team lost 10 games in a row. At the moment, they have won just 2 out of their last 6 games.

This performance from the team has ignited some boos from the crowd. While speaking with the reporters, Bregman took accountability for his form and expressed that these boos can be directed towards him.

Those can be directed at me because I haven’t come through with guys in scoring position. I have plenty of chances. Guys are getting on-base in front of me all the time.

Alex Bregman said as per Jesse Rogers

Up next for the Cubs is a 6-game road trip. They will first take on the struggling Colorado Rockies before facing the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park.
