A few days after signing a contract with the Los Angeles Rams, star defensive end Myles Garrett showed up at Dodger Stadium to throw the ceremonial first pitch. For the occasion, Garrett also paid his tributes to one of LA’s greatest sons.

The Dodgers and the Angels’ game couldn’t have been scheduled at a better time. The city’s football team, the Rams, had just traded for the reigning defensive player of the year to boost their Super Bowl chances. They already boast the presence of the best player in football, Matthew Stafford, so why not add the best player on defense?

Garrett arrived in the City of Angels to complete his historic move from the Cleveland Browns. After penning a new deal, the 30-year-old visited the biggest baseball rivalry in these parts, the Dodgers against the Angels. While Garrett’s presence itself brought out a loud cheer from the crowd, some keen sports fans zoned in on the graffiti on his t-shirt.

On Garrett’s shirt, a giant bust of the late great Kobe Bryant shined in the LA sun. Bryant dominated the basketball scene during his heyday with the LA Lakers, winning five NBA Championships from 2000 to 2010.

The fun began after Garrett completed his part. Bettors expected the Dodgers to wipe the floor with the Angels because the blue half of LA was 2-0 in the series. But surprisingly, the Angels, who went into the game with a severe losing record, pulled off a 13-5 victory. Up next, the Angels take on the Houston Astros, while the Dodgers face the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Why did Myles Garrett wear a Kobe Bryant-inspired T-shirt for the Dodgers game?

Over the years, LA has seen dozens of great athletes make their names in various sports. But some would argue that none come close to the impact Kobe Bryant or Mamba Magic had on not just the locals but the American people as a whole.

Garrett, a young man growing up in Arlington, Texas, is one such individual whom Bryant touched with his greatness.

I’m a big Kobe [Bryant] fan, I used to wear the short fro just like Kobe. That love has been there ever since and I had a lot of respect for it, you know, the way he goes about his business. Obviously, Mamba mentality, you know, the way he treated every single game, every single second he was out there, he never took it for granted. I’ve kind of treated my career and my life the same way.

Dodgers manager jokes about switching allegiance after the Myles Garrett trade

The Myles Garrett trade has changed several dynamics in the NFL and beyond. For Dave Roberts, the Dodgers’ manager, it has made him consider switching his allegiance from rooting for the other football team in the city, the Chargers.

He’s [Myles Garrett] top of the food chain; it’s going to make a good defense even better. I’m excited to see him throw out the first pitch and in a Rams uniform. I used to be a Chargers fan but now it’s sensitive up here.

Roberts joked

Roberts played a couple of seasons in center field for the San Diego Padres back in the day. Back when the Chargers operated from the quaint Californian suburbs. After retirement, Roberts has led the Dodgers to three World Series titles.
