President Donald Trump attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on June 8 after receiving an invitation from Knicks owner James Dolan, drawing attention from players, league officials, and fans as New York hosted its first Finals game in more than two decades.
Trump confirmed his plans to attend during a June 4 press conference, saying, “The answer is yes, he’s invited me, I’m going,” while adding that he could also be present for Game 4 of the series.
Ahead of tipoff, San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox commented on the heightened security measures surrounding the president’s visit. He said, “I think the president being here just makes it inconvenient for everybody else. We’re getting screened like it’s TSA. It’s a little inconvenient for the people that’s got to play, but it is what it is.”
On the Knicks side, Karl-Anthony Towns declined to focus on Trump’s attendance when asked, instead emphasizing the significance of the NBA Finals returning to Madison Square Garden after a lengthy absence.
He said, “Fans have earned the right and deserve the right to see Finals basketball played here, at Madison Square Garden. For it to be a long time to see Finals basketball, it’s up to us to bring it, give ’em something to get loud about, give them something to cheer for, and also give them something to believe in.”
Knicks forward OG Anunoby echoed a similar sentiment, noting that the team’s approach would remain unchanged regardless of who was in attendance. He explained, “I think he’ll just be there watching the game. We’re going to go as usual, just play our game, try to win the game.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also welcomed Trump’s appearance at the Finals, praising the atmosphere surrounding the Knicks’ postseason run.
He said, “We can emphasize what we have in common, not what pulls us apart. We’re seeing that in New York, and I think President Trump is very much a New Yorker, and I’m thrilled that yet another New Yorker wants to participate in the enthusiasm and the joy around this Knicks team.”
Silver also reflected on Trump’s longstanding connection to the franchise before entering politics. “He was a big Knicks fan. I was there at many Knicks games with him in the old days. He attended many of our drafts when they used to take place at Madison Square Garden.”
The commissioner added that fans understood the additional attention and security that came with a presidential visit and that it contributed to the scale of the event.
President Donald Trump booed during historic NBA finals appearance
Donald Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game when he arrived at Madison Square Garden for Game 3 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.

The president was booed by sections of the crowd during the national anthem after he appeared on the arena’s giant video screens while saluting. Following the game, Trump told reporters, “It was, I think, mostly cheers. It was loud, and it was very enthusiastic.”
Trump attended the game alongside his granddaughter Kai Trump, Knicks owner James Dolan, and several members of his administration, including Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
His appearance led to heightened security measures around Madison Square Garden. Streets surrounding the arena were closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, while thousands of New York Police Department officers and hundreds of Secret Service personnel were deployed throughout the area. Fans entering the arena were required to pass through airport-style security screenings.
The restrictions caused delays for many spectators and affected businesses near the venue as foot traffic decreased during one of the city’s biggest sports events of the year.
Several celebrities were also in attendance, including Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey, Christine Taylor, Ben Stiller, and Timothée Chalamet. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended the game as well. On the court, the Spurs defeated the Knicks 115-111, trimming New York’s lead in the best-of-seven NBA Finals series to 2-1.
