Victor Wembanyama was left absolutely distraught after Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday night. The San Antonio Spurs blew a 29-point lead in the second half as the New York Knicks pulled off the biggest comeback in Finals history.
Game 4 was a game of two halves. The Spurs were red hot in the first half as they set an NBA Finals record with 14 threes in a half. Unfortunately, they went ice cold in the second half and ended up suffering a 107-106 defeat to the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
Following the loss, Wembanyama described the feeling as painful after blowing such a big lead.
Feels like we worked too hard to give up our lead. It’s as simple as that. It just hurt.

Victor Wembanyama and his teammates will be livid with how things ended on Wednesday night. The game was theirs to lose, but they committed some silly mistakes and choked when things got tight. They have been fearless throughout the postseason despite their lack of playoff experience. However, their inexperience was on full display towards the end of the fourth quarter.
De’Aaron Fox was guilty of going for a layup in the last 10 seconds of the game instead of just wasting time and getting fouled. Meanwhile, Wembanyama missed two clutch free throws with under two minutes to go.
Wembanyama and the Spurs have their backs against the wall now. All four games have been tight and could have gone either way. However, they find themselves 3-1 down in the series and have to now win three games in a row.
Victor Wembanyama on his mindset after Game 4 loss
The loss in Game 4 will be a tough pill to swallow for the Spurs. The led throughout the match until the final two minutes of the fourth quarter. Victor Wembanyama has been clear that he thrives under pressure, but that was not the case on Wednesday.
After the game, Wembanyama was asked what was going on in his mind.
What’s going through my mind right now is gonna go one of two ways. A bad one and a good one. The bad one would be giving up, the good one would be getting stronger through this.

Wembanyama held himself accountable after losing Games 1 and 2 at home. He bounced back strongly in Game 3 and started off aggressively in Game 4 as well. But it looks like fatigue may be playing a role in the Frenchman in his first-ever playoffs.
Victor Wembanyama on what went wrong in Game 2
Victor Wembanyama and the rest of the Spurs were aggressive from tip-off. They dominated the Knicks on both ends of the court, taking a 27-point lead into halftime.
Victor Wembanyama led the scorers for the Spurs with 24 points to go along with 13 rebounds and three blocks in 44 minutes. But he shot at just 36% from the field and made just two out of eight three-pointers.

When asked what went wrong for the Spurs in the second half, Wembanyama said:
Can’t really explain it right now. Execution, greediness of some sort. We clearly weren’t the most hungry in the second half.

The Spurs face an uphill battle. They will be looking to become just the second team ever to pull off a 3-1 comeback in the NBA Finals. But for that to happen, they will need Wembanyama to be at his very best for the remainder of the series.
