The start, so far, is not what Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs may have looked for in the NBA Finals. The Spurs center committed a costly blunder with 10 seconds to go in the fourth quarter of Game 2 when the scores were tied at 104-104.
After a disappointing fourth quarter in Game 1, the Spurs were a lot better in Game 2. Down by nine points heading into the final quarter, they outscored the New York Knicks 29-21 in the quarter. In the end, the Spurs succumbed to a 105-104 defeat at the Frost Bank Center on Friday night.
Wembanyama did not hide his feelings when speaking to the media and shouldered the blame for the loss in Game 2.
I threw that one away. I messed up. We didn’t play great as a team. We needed to win that game. This game was ours. But at this point it’s done. Am I going to regret it? Yes, of course. Am I going to use that to fuel me and to fuel us for next game? Absolutely.

The NBA Finals have not gone according to plan for Victor Wembanyama so far. After taking accountability for the loss in Game 1, Wembanyama blamed himself for the shocking turnover in Game 2.
There is no doubt that Wembanyama is the best player in the league today. He put in a much better performance in Game 2, but his fourth turnover at the worst possible time cost them the match.
While Wemby was left disappointed after the game, he revealed that the shocking loss was only going to fuel him as the series now moves to New York. With two consecutive home losses, the Spurs face an uphill task ahead of them.

It was not the ending that the Spurs or any team in the finals would hope to have. After taking out the defending champions, Oklahoma City Thunder, in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals, many expected the Spurs to triumph over the Knicks.

With Game 2 in their hands, the Spurs committed some uncharacteristic errors in the final stages of the game. A disappointed Victor Wembanyama revealed that he could not remember the ending of the match.
I’m still very blurry, and that’s the whole problem. I need to have more poise, more control over the game. That’s the general image.

The Spurs find themselves in a precarious position. While their lack of playoff experience was not a factor throughout the postseason, it seems to be hurting them when it matters the most.
Victor Wembanyama talks about taking the last shot
With the Knicks up by one point in the final seconds of the game, the Spurs had a chance to come out with a win. Victor Wembanyama got the final shot to hit a game-winner but his final jump shot bounced off the rim. After the game, the 22-year-old believed that he had a good look to make the shot.
Of course I liked the shot, but I feel like in this moment you need to shoot to score. And, in moments like this, it’s like results matter more than process. We just need to score, I need to score, that’s the whole point.
