Dustin Poirier is undoubtedly one of the most decorated veterans in UFC history. While he never captured undisputed lightweight gold, he earned widespread admiration through elite performances and memorable fights. However, recent days have brought unwanted attention after reports emerged about the veteran’s arrest. Newly released TMZ footage also showed an intoxicated Poirier at Atlanta Airport.

The footage released by TMZ showed Poirier confronting airport staff after being removed from a flight at Atlanta Airport. Body-camera video later captured the former UFC interim champion acting aggressively toward responding officers. He was seen using profanity as the situation escalated and continued arguing with authorities. Eventually, additional officers arrived and took Poirier into custody following the incident.

Poirier was charged with misdemeanor public intoxication, also known as public drunkenness under Georgia law. Following his arrest, ‘The Diamond’ was booked into Clayton County Jail and remained there for several hours. He was later released on bond that same evening, while the case proceeded through the legal system. The Louisiana native also made his initial court appearance the following day.

Poirier last competed at UFC 318, where he suffered a defeat to Max Holloway in the final fight of his professional career. Following his retirement, the UFC veteran frequently discussed the difficulties of adjusting to life without training camps and competition. After news of the arrest emerged, Poirier addressed the situation, spoke openly about his recent personal struggles, and asked for help.

I’m at the point where I need some help, walking away from fighting hasn’t been easy on me and alcohol isn’t the answer. It has ruined my father’s life and I will not allow it to ruin mine, my family deserve me at 100%. I’m trying to do everything I can to get my mind right and take the right next steps.

Former UFC fighter and analyst Ben Askren also shared a separate video showing Poirier enjoying time with friends before the incident. The footage showed the retired lightweight playfully wrestling at the Atlanta airport and laughing alongside members of his group. ‘The Diamond’ was reportedly preparing to board a Delta flight from Atlanta, Georgia, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, during a trip with friends.

The arrest also drew attention from longtime rival Colby Covington, who recently mocked Dustin Poirier’s legacy and retirement from the sport. Their feud dates back years to their time at American Top Team and remains one of the UFC’s most notable rivalries. The incident also renewed discussion about the long-term effects of MMA, as many retired fighters have spoken about the challenges of life after competition.
