NBA free agency could not have opened with a bigger bombshell than the news of LeBron James parting ways with the Los Angeles Lakers after eight years.
The notion prior to the big announcement was that the franchise was busy reinforcing its roster rather than sending out an offer to the superstar who essentially rebuilt the Lakers as a contender.
Despite being 41, the forward proved that he can do anything the team wants him to do. Whether it is hanging back as a third option or leading from the front, he proved he still can be an All-NBA-level player.
Despite that, fans and analysts felt that the organization was not considering him to be a core part of their plans for next season, as was evident when they did not even attempt to establish contact.
Then, when they handed Austin Reaves the richest contract for an undrafted player, many swooped in to slam the Lakers for wanting the King back.
But after LeBron James announced that he was stepping away from Hollywood, it came to light that he had already communicated this well in advance. The Lakers wanted him back, but he chose to part ways.
No, THANK YOU! Truly a honor to wear the (purple and yellow heart emoticons) while trying to continuing the greatness & legacies that came before me! Hope I made a few proud during my stint.

This was the superstar’s response to a Lakers statement where Jeanie Buss thanked him for his services. James reiterated that it was his honor to play for the franchise, as he knew what the pressure would be.
Luka Doncic gives LeBron James his tribute
There are several reasons why LeBron James chose to step away from the Lakers, where he could have stayed until he retired. One of the reasons was the arrival of Luka Doncic.
Having an established superstar 14 years younger is not just a blessing, but a chance to shift the franchise’s direction towards life after the veteran retired.
James handed over the baton to the Slovenian soon after he arrived, which is why Doncic has nothing but respect and admiration for his mentor.
An honor to play with and learn from you, LeBron James.

This should stop any narratives that the two playmaking scorers were locking heads with each other. Unlike another famous Lakers’ split from the past, the father of three simply walked away from the franchise after helping his successor get to grips with life in LA.

The four-time champion has not only left the Lakers with the best version of Doncic but also mentored Austin Reaves into the superstar he is today.
LeBron James could face the Lakers next season on any team
While most of the speculation is of LeBron James either joining the Warriors, Cavaliers, or the Heat, the superstar has seemingly kept his options open.

LeBron James has instructed Rich Paul to talk to everyone around the league who is interested in him playing for them and come back to him with what the options are so he can make his decision, a source familiar with James’ thinking told ESPN.

This means that he would like to weigh every option at hand before deciding which jersey to wear next. Surely, it would have to be a team that is ready to contend for the title.

But keeping an open mind also means that it will be tough for other teams to make free agency decisions before the four-time league MVP decides where he wants to play next.
