With LeBron James‘ contract with the Los Angeles Lakers coming to an end, there were a lot of noise surrounding his future with the franchise. It has been reported that the Lakers did speak to James and his team after the NBA Finals as teams could begin speaking to their own free agents.

James is coming off a record-breaking 23rd season in the NBA. While he may not be the player he once was, the four-time champion has shown that he can still play at an elite level.

NBA Insider Shams Charania revealed that there has not been much communication between James’ camp and the Lakers.

There was a check-in call made, to my understanding, early in free agency once teams were able to start negotiating with their own free agents after the end of the NBA Finals. Since then though there hasn’t been much communication, from my understanding, between the Lakers and LeBron James’ side. And certainly not an offer yet.

The future of LeBron James is always up in the air whenever a season ends, especially when his contract is nearing its end. So far, only limited talks have happened.

While some have suggested that James should stay and end his career with the Lakers, some believe that he can do better elsewhere.

A few weeks ago, it was reported that the Lakers would prioritize signing Austin Reaves over James. The Lakers have done exactly that as they extended Reaves’ contract after offering him a four-year, $185 million deal.

James remains undecided about his future at the moment. He was linked to the Cleveland Cavaliers as well as many believe that he would want to end his career in the club where it all began.

The smartest thing for LeBron James is to go back to the Lakers

LeBron James has had to adapt to a new role for the Lakers in the 2025-26 campaign. With Luka Doncic being the focal point of the team and the rise of Austin Reaves, James had to play as a second or third option sometimes.

James’ former teammate in the Cavs, Channing Frye was against the idea of James returning to Cleveland.

And here’s why, I don’t like the setup Cleveland got too many what-ifs now. After seeing what I saw, like 52 year old LeBron ain’t going to solve them issues.

The Cavs are coming off an Eastern Conference Finals finish in the playoffs this year. They have not reached the NBA Finals since James left the club in 2018. However, Frye believes that his former club is not the right place for James considering all their issues.

LeBron James could win a title with the Miami Heat

The biggest trade in the offseason so saw Giannis Antetokounmpo join the Miami Heat. The move put an end to the nonstop trade rumors for the past one year. However, the Heat still have a lot of changes to make if they have to have any chance of competing for the championship next season.

NBA analyst Nick Wright believes that the former MVP could win a title if he were to return to the Heat this year.

I think if he were to go to Miami, a Miami team that I don’t really believe in right now but he would solve a lot of what their potential issues are. That Miami team could win the title.

Nick Wright said on What’s Wright?

James impressed the NBA world with his performances in the playoffs this year. He led the Lakers with Doncic injured and took them to the second round after beating the Houston Rockets in the first round. If he were to join the Heat, he would be joining forces with Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, which could send shockwaves in the East.
