Willson Contreras came under the spotlight again on Tuesday following a heated moment. During the game against the Washington Nationals at Fenway Park, he argued with pitcher Cade Cavalli, which saw the benches clear. Contreras then threw his helmet at the opposing star.

The incident between the two ignited in the 4th inning when the Red Sox were leading 1-0. Earlier in the game, Contreras was involved in the opening run as his routine hit was fumbled by Curtis Mead in the infield.

This allowed him to reach first base safely while Anthony Seigler came home from third base. It did not go down as an RBI for Contreras, as it was a fielding error from the Nationals’ third baseman.

Apart from that, there was reportedly some brushing between him and Cavalli at the end of the first inning near the dugout.

In the 4th inning, he worked a 3-2 count against Cavalli. An 87 mph sweeper from the Nationals right-handed pitcher saw Contreras end up striking out.

As he was walking to the dugout, the emotions were running high for Cavalli. He ended up shouting, “sit down boy,” as the Red Sox star struck out.

Contreras took exception to this. He charged down to have some words with Cavalli. The benches quickly got cleared as some players and umpires tried to diffuse the situation.

Following some pushing and shoving, Contreras jumped a bit and hurled his helmet towards Cavalli. It seemingly hit Andres Chaparro more than Cavalli. Check out the incident below:

It took a few Red Sox members to calm down the 34-year-old. Once things cooled down, the umpires ejected him from the game.

This marked a second straight game where Contreras had been ejected. On Monday, he was thrown out for tapping his helmet after 1st base umpire Nic Lentz rang him up on a check swing appeal. As per the NESN booth, he is the first Boston Red Sox player to be ejected in back-to-back games.

Cavalli, meanwhile, remained in the game. The pitcher picked up a career-high 13 strikeouts and gave up just 1 hit in 7 innings.

The Nationals ended up winning 8-1 and improved their record to 44-43 for the season. As for the Red Sox, this loss left them with a 37-47 record.

Earlier in the 1st inning, there was some brushing between him and Cavalli. When asked by a reporter whether that incident led to the huge argument between them, the first baseman/catcher shook his head and expressed that he had apologized for that.

I apologized. I felt something, and then I turned around, it was like, ‘My fault, my fault.’ It was like nothing. If you think that was on purpose, that was not.

Willson Contreras told the reporters

In his explanation, Cavalli claimed that it was just a part of the game. However, the pitcher expressed that he did not receive any apology from anyone for the first-inning incident.

The Red Sox broadcasters, meanwhile, called it a classless statement from Cavalli. They blasted him live on air while defending the emotions of Contreras, whose country, Venezuela, was recently hit with two devastating earthquakes.

Apart from Contreras, utility player Nate Eaton and interim manager Chad Tracy were also removed from the game on the Red Sox side. From the Nationals’ end, Miles Mikolas was ejected for his part in the incident.

It now remains to be seen whether the MLB will take action against the 3-time All-Star. The Red Sox will look to take the rubber game on Wednesday, their final home game before the 2026 All-Star Game in Philadelphia.
