Mitchell Robinson was drafted by the New York Knicks as the 36th overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft. He was the longest serving member of the roster till the 2025-26 campaign.

The center played eight seasons for the Knicks. The last season was undoubtedly the best of all as the Knicks lifted their first championship in 53 years. While it was a memorable season for Robinson and the Knicks, it also brought an end to his eight-year spell with the club.

Hollywood star and Knicks superfan Ben Stiller reflected on the impact Robinson made during the franchise’s resurgence. He wrote on X:

Thank you Mitchell Robinson for being one of one. I loved your singular style and watching you move like so fast for a person so big on defense and rebound like no other. You bled for your team and gave us something to cheer for. You lived through the rough times and built us into a championship team. This is how I’ll choose to remember you. Feel lucky to have witnessed it all.

Ben Stiller is an avid follower of the NBA and is a diehard fan of the Knicks. He is often seen courtside at Madison Square Garden cheering for his team. Alongside Timothee Chalamet, Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, and other celebrities, they are often seen supporting the Knicks and are labeled as Knicks superfans.

Mitchell Robinson played an important role for the Knicks during their championship run. Coming off the bench, he made his impact felt on the defensive end of the floor and with his rebounding. He provided some valuable minutes for the Knicks whenever Karl-Anthony Towns needed a breather.

After eight seasons with the Knicks, Robinson signed a three-year contract with the Boston Celtics. Stiller heaped praise on Robinson for his style of play and thanked him for being with the franchise through it all.

Robinson has suffered from various injuries throughout his career. He has made just 77 regular-season appearances in his last two seasons. However, he was healthy for the playoffs this year and played a crucial role in guarding Victor Wembanyama in the NBA Finals.

Knicks could have signed Mitchell Robinson if they went above the second apron

When Knicks owner James Dolan revealed that the club would avoid crossing the NBA’s restrictive second apron, it was expected that there would be a few departures from the club. Retaining Mitchell Robinson became a whole lot more difficult as well. Eventually, he agreed to a three-year $47 million deal with the Celtics.

NBA insider Ian Begley revealed that the Knicks could have signed a similar deal with Robinson if they went above the second apron.

The Knicks could have, in theory, signed Mitchell Robinson to the deal that the Celtics signed him to if they were willing to go above the second apron. They choose not to. Now, they have to fill some holes at center.

It remains to be seen how the Knicks fill the hole left by Robinson’s departure. Meanwhile, the Celtics have been pretty active in the offseason after trading away Jaylen Brown for Paul George and a few picks on Wednesday.
