Heading into the draft, Los Angeles Lakers GM Rob Pelinka did not believe Cameron Carr was still available. Having done his due diligence, the executive did not hesitate to trade up and select the Baylor star.

The Lakers were poised to select with the 25th overall pick in the 2026 draft. But when they saw that the 6’5″ star guard was hanging around, they dialed the offices of the New York Knicks and packaged a deal where they could jump up that one spot they needed to nab Carr.

It seems they knew his value was too good to pass up and did not want to take the risk with the Knicks picking next. Even the 21-year-old was not aware of this trade until his name was called.

He initially got hold of the Knicks’ team cap. But then, as he walked up the stairs to greet Commissioner Adam Silver, he realized that he was traded.

At the time, Lakers fans rejoiced knowing this was a steal of a pick. The franchise has not been very good in the draft in the last few years.

It seems their faith has received some proof. After scoring 19 points in his first Summer League game, the two-way star exploded for 26 against the Miami Heat.

What surprised fans was that in the first game, he used five three-pointers to get to his number. This time, Cameron Carr used fewer shots from distance, but used more of his mid-range ability to produce a game-high performance.

Social media points out facts to Lakers fans

Lakers’ fanbase might be justified to be excited about the rookie. After all, he was shooting at 45% from the field, which is remarkable for someone just coming in and trying to find their feet against some of the best young players in the country.

However, social media was quick to dampen this excitement. They pointed out that Lakers rookies have excelled in the past, especially in the Summer League games.

Be Dalton Knecht or Bronny James, these players have performed well, only to be sidelined in the regular season with hardly a few minutes to play.

Knecht has not been able to get any amount of minutes in his second year in the league, and LeBron James‘ son is possibly a trade away from exiting the Lakers altogether.

Fans pointed out that Lakers fans should take their time to judge whether Cameron Carr is actually that good. Check out examples of those reactions below.

The Lakers drafted Cameron Carr with the hope that his athletic ability, along with his wingspan, would be important while defending the perimeter. His skills might exactly suit what Luka Doncic needs. The Slovenian is not known for his defensive prowess, and that’s where Carr comes in.

Cameron Carr had to learn on the fly about sudden death overtime games

The second game of this Summer League may be Cameron Carr’s best so far, but he also had to learn on the fly how to adjust his mentality in overtime.

As soon as the horn went off and they said, ‘All right, sudden death.’

Cameron Carr said

The Minnesota native revealed this when journalist Khobi Price asked him how it was to adjust to an overtime session. The rookie does not have experience with it in college.

The last time he played in an overtime session was in middle school. Therefore, he did not have any choice but to listen and learn, and play to win. As Cameron Carr clarified, the Lakers had only one instruction, win, and he followed the instruction well.
