Jannik Sinner is into the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. He will be playing in the last eight in the tournament for the fifth consecutive time.
In the fourth round, the defending champion clinched a 6-3, 7-6(0), 6-3 win over Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki to schedule his next match against Jan-Lennard Struff. At present, Sinner’s biggest rival is considered heat because it has not only caused him physical discomfort during matches but also forced him to retire mid-match.
In the sweltering conditions at the French Open, the South Tyrol native, even though he needed just a game win in the third set to clinch his second-round match, ended up losing it to Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Also, in last year’s Shanghai Masters, he was forced to retire mid-match in the third round.
At the press conference after his Wimbledon win, a journalist told him that there is going to be a heatwave at Wimbledon this week. When Sinner was told that because he is playing his matches at night, it may not be much of an issue for him, the World No.1 first gave a sarcastic response before saying that he is ready to play either at night or during the day.
It seems you know the schedule better than me. I don’t know when they put me. I’m happy either way. I feel I’m well prepared. We did a good preparation. Whatever happened in the past is gone already. Now we see if we found a solution. If not, we keep working for the next one. In any case, quarterfinal of a Grand Slam, the feelings are different. There’s definitely more tension. At the same time, I’m very happy where I am at the moment. We’ll see how it goes.
Sinner, who defeated Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s Wimbledon final, survived a scare in the first round because Miomir Kecmanovic took two sets off him but eventually lost the match.
Jannik Sinner evaluates Shintaro Mochizuki’s level
Before facing Jannik Sinner, Shintaro Mochizuki knocked out rising star Rafael Jodar in the previous round. The 23-year-old qualifier, winner of two Challenger-level titles, had never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam tournament before this Wimbledon. Sinner, at the press conference, analyzed Mochizuki’s level.

There used to be some players like him, of this kind. He is a very tricky player, especially on this surface, who has defeated incredible players to get here. Mentally, I was aware of that, at the beginning of the match, I was trying to figure out how to play against him.
Mochizuki played the main draw rounds of Wimbledon for the third time in his career. It was at SW19 back in 2023 that he made his Grand Slam main draw debut.
I had opportunities in the second set, couldn’t capitalize on them, and in the third set, I felt that both of us started playing better. I am very pleased with how I handled all these situations, because here you can get into certain troubles at moments.
Jannik Sinner added
Sinner is chasing his sixth title of the season in the grass-court Major. Before arriving in London, the 24-year-old did not feature in any warm-up tournament on grass.
And before his Roland Garros upset, the four-time Grand Slam champion completed the Career Golden Masters after winning at the Italian Open. He also lifted titles in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid.
Sinner will be hoping to improve his head-to-head record over his quarterfinal opponent, Jan-Lennard Struff, to a perfect 4-0 after their match. The German ace received the walkover from Hubert Hurkacz in the fourth round and eliminated former World No.1 Daniil Medvedev in the third round.
