Did Lakers Push LeBron James Out? How 4-Time Champion Realized His Time Was Up

After LeBron James left the Los Angeles Lakers, there was speculation that either the superstar had decided to leave on his own volition or the franchise had eventually pushed the man out who brought them their 17th NBA championship.
The buildup to this did not come out of the blue. It was clear that James had to take a pay cut if the Lakers committed to building a competent roster. James had made it clear that he would return if the Lakers built a contender around him.
Naturally, that expectation was a bit far-fetched because the franchise was focused on building around Luka Doncic, not a 41-year-old heading into retirement in a year or two. But what happened over the past month and a half led the father of three to decide to move on.
He might have been willing to take a pay cut from the $52.6 million he’d made the season before, sources said, if the Lakers explained how they planned to reallocate the money. They never did, and James never made himself available to meet. He had been a priority enough times in his career to know when he wasn’t one.
ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne revealed
This lack of communication was reported by Shams Charania earlier in free agency. Shelburne added that this lack of effort to connect gave LeBron James all the proof he needed in the world.
LeBron James knew for over a week that he was ready to move on from the Lakers. There’s was no reason to meet in person or virtually. The only difficulty was finding a place in the no-phone zone at Wimbledon for Rich Paul to place the call letting them know……

Knowing what entails to be a superstar, that silence led him to realize that he was not important enough to be notified of anything. That is what changed his 80% chance of returning to the Lakers to 0.
Lakers were going to force LeBron James into accepting massive pay cut
The four-time champion announced hours before the start of the 2026-27 season that he would leave the Lakers after eight years with them. The timing meant the organization could now dip into the $52 million he was leaving behind in cap space.

Within hours, GM Rob Pelinka executed a sign-and-trade with the Utah Jazz to bring in rising star Walker Kessler. Along with that, he signed a few other players. All of these decisions indicated that the Lakers were building around Luka Doncic.
On top of that, these signings came after they had inked Austin Reaves to a 4-year, $185 million contract. The writing on the wall was clear.
James would have likely been offered what was left after a center was secured.

Therefore, the Lakers would have done everything and then approached LeBron James with an offer. Ramona Shelburne added that the team knew all too well that the four-time league MVP would take this as a massive disrespect, which is why they kept quiet.
However, it seems the superstar forward understood in advance what was about to happen, and decided for himself before the Lakers had to.
Lakers did not give LeBron James the respect he deserved
This entire discourse sums up in two ways. One was that they immediately switched towards building around Luka Doncic the moment he arrived. Two, they had to push LeBron James to accept a lesser role.
He realized that when the franchise willingly gave the Slovenian and Austin Reaves contract extensions, while not agreeing to such a deal with him over the past couple of years. But it seems the disrespect was going on for far too long.
Honestly, I don’t know if we did enough to acknowledge the sacrifices he made in being willing to give the keys over to Luka and AR this year. Of course, he has a big ego, and people can say what they want about that. But he’s also the No. 1 scorer in the history of basketball, and he really tried to do what was best for the team to win.
Ramona Shelburne quoted a Lakers staffer
If this is the acknowledgement from someone inside the building, it is clear that some believed that the top brass failed LeBron James somewhere. No wonder the four-time league MVP decided it was time to leave, rather than continue to be sidelined.
