It was always going to be a huge and difficult call for Giannis Antetokounmpo to leave the Milwaukee Bucks after 13 years. He was drafted by the Bucks as the 15th pick in the 2013 NBA draft. It worked out well for the player and club as they went on to achieve great things together.

During his 13-year spell, Antetokounmpo won two league MVP awards and one Defensive Player of the Year award. But his biggest achievement was leading the franchise to their first championship in 50 years in 2021 and being named the Finals MVP.

Antetokounmpo sat down for an interview with Bucks broadcaster Jim Paschke and spoke about why he decided to leave the Bucks after so many years.

I see guys playing deep into the playoffs and I think ‘ok, maybe if I switch teams and go somewhere else and have a better opportunity I can play deep into the playoffs and go chase another championship’ because I really want that. I’m scared that maybe when I don’t take that decision I’m going to be 37/38 hopefully and I’m retiring and say ‘why didn’t you take that risk?’

After a year full of rumors, Giannis Antetokounmpo was finally traded away by the Bucks. The Greek superstar was traded to the Miami Heat in what has been the biggest move so far in the offseason this year.

The Heat will present a new challenge for Antetokounmpo as he plays under Pat Riley and head coach Erik Spoelstra. There is no doubt that he is built for the Heat culture, but he will not be joined by his brothers in Miami, something the Bucks did to keep their franchise player happy.

Antetokounmpo is coming off a difficult 2025-26 campaign. While he averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists, he was restricted to just 36 appearances as he struggled with injuries.

As the Bucks missed the playoffs this year, Antetokounmpo felt that he was not competing at the highest level in his prime. They have not made a deep postseason run since winning the title in 2021. Hence, it was understandable for the 31-year-old to make a move.

Giannis Antetokounmpo would love to return to Milwaukee

There is no doubt that Giannis Antetokounmpo will go down as the greatest Bucks player ever. He has broken several franchise records during his time with the club and delivered them a championship after five decades.

During the interview, the two-time MVP was asked about returning to the Bucks later in his career.

That would be awesome if I could go and play and maybe come back. Kevin Garnett did the same thing. I saw this clip of him walking into the arena and they gave him a standing ovation and people till this day love him.

Bam Adebayo is the best American big man in the NBA today

After Antetokounmpo’s move to the Heat was confirmed, Bam Adebayo welcomed him with open arms. The Heat center took the Greek star to watch a WNBA game together, which featured Adebayo’s partner, A’ja Wilson.

In a live stream, Antetokounmpo was asked who is the best American big man in the league at present. The 31-year-old did not hesitate in naming his new teammate.

Bam Adebayo. I’ll tell you right now it’s Bam Adebayo bro.

Adebayo is one of the best defensive centers in the league. He may not be a scorer like others, but he has shown he can be dangerous at times.

Last season, he shocked the entire NBA world when he scored 83 points in a game against the Washington Wizards. It will be interesting to see how the two big men join forces for the Heat next season.
