Jannik Sinner will be looking to win his first Grand Slam of the season at Wimbledon. As defending champion, he’s the favorite to win the championship due to the absence of two-time winner Carlos Alcaraz. But seven-time champion Novak Djokovic is also competing for the title, and he will be in Sinner’s path.

Djokovic became the player with the most wins (107) at Wimbledon, breaking Roger Federer’s record. The Serbian legend has now reached the semi-finals of the grass-court major for the eighth consecutive year, better than any player currently in the ATP. He just needs one more Grand Slam to become the all-time major title winner on tour.

Jannik Sinner vs. Novak Djokovic: Match Preview

Jannik Sinner began the year unable to reach a final. At the Australian Open and Qatar Open, he crashed out, losing to players ranked lower than him. But March, April, and May were some of his most sublime months on tour. He won 30 consecutive matches and five ATP Tour-level Masters 1000 championships.

But he suffered a slump in the second round of the French Open, losing to Juan Manuel Cerundolo in five sets. He kicked off his Wimbledon campaign with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-2, 6-3 win against Miomir Kecmanović. The World No.1 then defeated Nuno Borges, Jenson Brooksby and Shintaro Mochizuki in straight sets. He got the better of Jan-Lennard Struff 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3 to reach the semi-finals.

On the other hand, Novak Djokovic has only played in five tournaments this season. The 24-time Grand Slam champion has prioritized major tournaments, reaching the Australian Open final and the third round at Roland Garros. He opted not to take part in any warm-up tournament ahead of Wimbledon.

At the All England Club, Djokovic has been achieving success on the court. He defeated Wu Yibing 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 and Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in the opening rounds. The 39-year-old overcame Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 7-5, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4) in the third round and then defeated Roman Safiullin 7-6 (6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. He needed five hours and 15 minutes to beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6(10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(4) in the quarterfinal.

Jannik Sinner vs. Novak Djokovic: Match Prediction

Jannik Sinner went on an unbeaten run from March to May and looked like the best player on tour. But after losing to Juan Manuel Cerundolo, there’s a growing belief that if the Italian star is pushed to the wall, he can lose matches. He slumped against Miomir Kecmanović and, against Jan-Lennard Struff, struggled in the humid conditions in London.

Speaking about the heat conditions, reports suggest that humidity will continue to build in London this week, which might be trouble for Sinner, considering what happened at the French Open. Novak Djokovic will hope to exploit that weak point, and most especially, drag each rally for as long as possible.

Djokovic showed against Felix Auger-Aliassime that he can deal with a more than five-hour match, but that can hardly be said for Sinner. However, Sinner leads their head-to-head record 6-5, but lost their most recent meeting at the Australian Open in five sets. Sinner won their last year’s clash at Wimbledon in straight sets, a match Djokovic played with an injury.

Match Prediction: Novak Djokovic to win in five sets.
