The 2025-26 campaign will be remembered as the season where Victor Wembanyama announced himself to the rest of the world. He finished third in the MVP race and became the youngest and first-ever unanimous Defensive Player of the Year.
Not only was he successful at an individual level, Wemby also led the Spurs to a second place finish in the Western Conference standings with a 62-20 record. While many doubted the Spurs in the postseason due to their inexperience, Wembanyama had other ideas as they made it to their first NBA Finals in 12 years.
Despite Wembanyama believing that the Spurs dominated in the Finals, they were humbled by the New York Knicks in five games. It was a disappointing ending for the young Spurs team but there were a lot of positives to take. It is a sign that the young Frenchman and the Spurs are likely going to dominate the league for the next decade.
Fans react to Victor Wembanyama taking a pay-cut in his new contract
The Spurs may be well ahead of schedule in terms of their development and performances after the 2025-26 season. With Wembanyama committing himself for the next five years, the Spurs will look to win at least one championship during this period.
Wembanyama went for the $252 million max contract and not the $303 million supermax contract available on the table. The $51 million pay-cut caught the attention of several NBA fans across social media.

With what I saw Donovan Mitchell signing, this looks like a bargain. And it gives the Spurs abit of flexibility.

We always knew Wemby was going to get paid. When he has had some more time in the league, he will truly be unstoppable. Especially with a little more veteran presence around him

Whatever it takes🖤
Wembanyama is only going to get better from here. He is following the trend set by Spurs legend Tim Duncan. The five-time champion took less money so that the Spurs could allocate more to teammates. It looks like French star plans to do the same as he will be looking to win his first title next year.
