On Sunday (July 12), Jannik Sinner overcame a set deficit against Alexander Zverev to win with scores of 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-4 in the Wimbledon final and became the 10th man in the Open Era to defend the crown in the tournament. Sinner, who has also become the first man since Carlos Alcaraz (2023 and 2024) to defend the title at SW19, clinched his 10th consecutive win over the German.

With this win, the now five-time Grand Slam champion will take home $4.8 million in prize money. The reigning Roland Garros champion, on the other hand, will pocket $2.4 million as the runner-up.

Prior to the Zverev clash, Sinner had dropped two sets, all in the first round against Miomir Kecmanovic. Zverev also dropped two sets before this match: against Alexander Blockx in the first round and against Jiri Lehecka in the fourth round.

Zverev had never made it past the fourth round of the grass-court Major before this year. In the semifinal, he dashed Arthur Fery‘s hope of becoming the first British man since Andy Murray at the 2016 Wimbledon to win a Grand Slam title.

Sinner, in his semifinal match, dashed Novak Djokovic‘s hope of winning the 25th Grand Slam title. It was Djokovic’s second back-to-back defeat at the hands of Sinner in the Wimbledon semifinal.

Jannik Sinner reacts to Alexander Zverev’s No.1 ranking goal

Alexander Zverev, earlier this year, said he was confident that he would end his Major drought this season. And after fulfilling his wish, he said one of his main goals is to become World No.1. Jannik Sinner, following the Wimbledon win, joked that he needs to be wary of the 29-year-old.

Amazing. But as Sascha did, I’d like to start with you and your whole team and family. You reached one of your goals, winning a Grand Slam. You made it happen in Paris. Today you were so, so close. If you play like this, I’m very, very sure you’re gonna have this one at home also. Amazing. Keep going. I know the goal for you is to become World No.1. You’re very, very close. We have to be very careful now. But congrats.

Jannik Sinner said during the trophy presentation

Before this event, Sinner took home five trophies, all after wins in Masters 1000s. He first completed the Sunshine Double, then stopped Alcaraz from defending his title in Monte Carlo, before claiming the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. He became the second man after Novak Djokovic to achieve the Career Golden Slam milestone after winning in his home event.

Everyone has family at home, and I always try to do my best when we are together. For me, the most important days are the off days when we have free time. And the practice days. We put a lot of work in there. To celebrate this kind of feeling at least one more time again is amazing. For me, Wimbledon has always been, back in the day, the only tennis tournament I watched since I was 10 or 11 years old. Now, to win twice here means the world to me.

Jannik Sinner told ESPN after the win

Zverev, prior to Wimbledon and the French Open, had made one final and lost it (in Madrid to Sinner). His victory over Fery in the semifinal took him to the second spot in the live rankings table, removing Alcaraz from that position.

Sinner, who has now become the eighth man in the Open Era to win at the All England Club without playing a warm-up event on grass, will continue to sit at the top of the table on Monday. He dethroned Alcaraz from the position after winning in Monte Carlo.
