The Toronto Blue Jays have been far from their best this season. On Sunday, they lost 5-4 to the San Diego Padres and dropped the final series. As the team heads into the All-Star Break, manager John Schneider called for consistency from his team.

The Canadian outfit started this season as one of the favorites following their World Series run last year. They were 2 outs away in Game 7 from winning their first championship since 1993.

They suffered late heartbreak as the Los Angeles Dodgers tied the game in the 9th inning through a solo home run from Miguel Rojas. Jeff Hoffman was the one who gave up that home run. In the 11th inning, Will Smith homered and gave the Dodgers a 5-4 lead, which they were able to hold on to.

Fast forward to July 2026, and Hoffman was once again the one who blew the save. After losing his closing pitcher role, he had been in fine form. Since the start of June, he had a 0.62 ERA with 19 strikeouts until he faced the Padres on Sunday.

He entered the 8th inning with his team leading 4-3 and 6 outs away from an important series win. He ended up giving up 2 runs, which saw the Padres take the lead. The Blue Jays were unable to make a late comeback and dropped the game and the series. Hoffman was credited with the loss in this game.

With this loss, the Blue Jays fell to the bottom of the AL East standings. While they lost, their division rivals, the Boston Red Sox, completed a 3-game sweep of the New York Mets. It was also a 9th successive win for the Red Sox.

As a result of this, the Blue Jays will enter the All-Star Game this week in 5th place in the division standings. This is the first time since April 18 that they have sole possession of the final place.

They came into the series against the Padres on a run of mixed form. While the team won the series against the San Francisco Giants after losing the series opener, they had lost the series against the Seattle Mariners, having won the first game of the series.

In the last 10 games, they have a 5-5 record. In the conversation with the reporters after the game on Sunday, John Schneider expressed that they needed consistency from the top of the lineup.

This is not where we want to be, obviously. We’ve been trending in the right direction offensively the last two weeks, minus the Seattle series. … There are little things we have to be better at and we’re looking for more consistency from regular guys up and down the lineup.

John Schneider said

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is one of them who has struggled this season. While the 1st baseman has 2 home runs and 6 RBIs in his last 7 games, he has managed just 6 home runs and 41 RBIs in 91 games this year. On Sunday, he went 0-for-4 with 2 strikeouts.

Blue Jays’ star Kevin Gausman claims they need to start playing better

The Toronto Blue Jays will enter the 2026 All-Star Break with a 45-51 record. Things are not going right for them at the moment, and Kevin Gausman knows that. The pitcher claimed that his team needs to start playing better.

Gausman was on the mound for the Blue Jays on Sunday as they hoped to get a series win in San Diego. The right-handed pitcher threw 6 innings while giving up 3 runs and picking up 8 strikeouts.

When he left the game, the score was tied at 3-3. The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the 8th inning through a single from Jonatan Clase. Jeff Hoffman then was unable to contain the Padres and gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the frame, which resulted in their loss.

It’s kind of make or break. We got to start playing better.

Kevin Gausman told the reporters

Last year, the Blue Jays were 55-41 at the end of the 1st half of the season. This year, they find themselves batting hard for the final Wild Card spot in the American League.

After the All-Star Break, they will take on their division leaders, the Tampa Bay Rays. After that, they face the Chicago White Sox, who go into the break tied at the top of the AL Central division with the Cleveland Guardians.
