Even though Alexander Zverev failed to end his losing streak against Jannik Sinner, the level he showed during the Wimbledon final impressed many, but not Serena Williams‘ coach Rennae Stubbs. A player of Zverev’s caliber is on a 10-match losing streak against the Italian ace.
And when he took the first set off the now five-time Grand Slam champion, he finally snapped the 14-set losing streak versus Sinner. Zverev, who last defeated Sinner in the 2023 US Open fourth round, hasn’t yet broken him since the 2024 Vienna Open final.
So when the World No.1 dropped the first set, Stubbs really thought Zverev could end up upsetting Sinner. But she quickly changed her mind when Zverev missed a forehand in the second-set tiebreak, which Sinner won in a convincing fashion.
That’s not going to change until he can hit that forehand when it really matters, not just on set point when he lost his mind when he won the first set. Remember, he turned around to his players’ box, and he was like, ‘Come on!’ It was so over the top. I was like, ‘Dude, you’ve got two more sets to win against the best player in the world, calm down.’
Rennae Stubbs said on The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast
Zverev earned just one chance to break Sinner during the third set. Although he failed to do so, he also slipped and fell on the ground and clutched his knee in pain. At the press conference later, Zverev said he overextended his knee again, due to which his serve speed went down a bit, but other than that, everything else was fine.
I felt like he felt he was going to win the tournament after that set, and I was like, ‘Nah’. As soon as he missed that forehand in the second-set tiebreak, that was it.
Rennae Stubbs added
Sinner has improved his head-to-head record over the 29-year-old to 11-4. The win made him the 10th man in the Open Era to defend the Wimbledon title and the first one since Carlos Alcaraz (2023 and 2024). Zverev has missed a chance to complete the Channel Slam. He ended his Grand Slam title drought at the French Open with a five-set win over Flavio Cobolli.
Darren Cahill on Jannik Sinner beating the heat to win Wimbledon
It’s safe to say that Jannik Sinner has conquered one of his, if not the biggest, enemies during his Wimbledon run: the heat. London was boiling during the tournament, but Sinner did his homework well and escaped the French Open fate.

In Paris, Sinner suffered cramps under the scorching sun, due to which he ended up losing in the second round. Sinner, before Wimbledon, revealed that training more in extreme temperatures is going to be a regular thing for him. His proud coach, Darren Cahill, said the team’s goal is to make him more acclimatized to playing in extreme heat.
Look, he’s a redhead who lives in the north of Italy, who grew up in the snow and the Alps. Hot weather is a little bit different for him than it is for most people. The more time he spends in the heat, the better he’s going to be at it. We already saw this here. I think it was one of the hottest Wimbledon on record. He managed through that incredibly well.
Darren Cahill said at the press conference
Sinner is next scheduled to play the Canadian Open, but he has not yet confirmed his participation. He is on a 34-match winning streak in Masters 1000s that started at the 2025 Paris Masters.
