Last Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta was one of the wildest nights of William Byron racing career, with the below average car and overall chaos at the track causing him to lose control. He was caught having an uncharacteristic radio conversation with long-time crew chief Rudy Fugle that stirred controversy.

It surprised the whole NASCAR garage, as the duo are one of the most reserved and calm in the garage. That’s why it went viral on social media, despite the fact that similar radio fights seldom happen during races. Talking about it ahead of the North Wilkesboro race, Byron asserted that things were overblown by social media.

I do feel like it gets overblown a little bit because I’m usually really quiet on the radio, and he is too. I was a little bit surprised that it was clipped and sent all over the socials because you hear that if you watch Radioactive, you hear that stuff every week from a lot of teams. But you just don’t hear it from us because we’re pretty quiet people.

William Byron said at North Wilkesboro.

The No:24 Chevy driver pointed out that the heated conversation was the product of the nightmare season they are having in 2026, that is yet to yield them a win. William Byron highlighted that both and his crew chief was frustrated with how the race as well as the whole season has been challenging them.

Sometimes you have to have a pop-off valve, and our season has kind of been a lot of hits and misses. Last week was a miss at that point of the race, and we were just expressing that, and we were frustrated at the car, frustrated at the situation. Mad at the fact that we couldn’t, that we went a complete 180 in just one run on track.

William Byron added as reported by On3.com.

William Byron insists he wasn’t furious at his crew chief

He insisted that there is no bad blood between him and Fugle, as they talked it out soon after the race. They have to work together under positive vibes to found redemption from the tough streak they have found themselves at.

[Fugle] and I are great. We talked right after that happened, and we’re in a great spot. It’s just frustration with the situation and the way that we’ve been running in some ways. We’ve had some hits, and Chicago was a big hit. We won both stages, and that was a week before that. So, we obviously feel very capable.

William Byron asserted.

Furthermore, in the same conversation, he highlighted how he is closer to Fugle than many key figures of his life as they are in contact regularly. They are not mad at each other; they are mad at the situation they are in.

I mean, we text; I probably text him more than anyone, and we talk in person probably more than anyone. I think it’s just the nature of any relationship. Like I said, it’s the fact that we’re frustrated with the situation and the car and how it was acting in those moments. We’re not mad at each other, but it just comes across as a lot of frustration.

William Byron said.

The comments from the veteran racer are on point and shows how frustrations sometimes get the worse out of even the quietest people in the garage. It would be interesting to see how long it would take the duo to get back to winning ways.
