WTA’s controversial eligibility policy came into effect on Tuesday (July 21). Every player on the tour has to undergo genetic sex testing only once in their career in order to compete on the tour.

Players have to provide a cheek swab, blood, or saliva to test for the presence of the SRY (Sex-determining Region Y) gene. The SRY gene, a part of the Y chromosome, is responsible for the development of male characteristics.

The only players with negative results will be allowed to compete. Those showing positive results will also be allowed to play but only after more medical assessments.

As per the previous eligibility policy that was updated in 2024, trans players were allowed to compete. At present, there is no known trans player in any category of women’s tennis. The reason behind this new policy, as per the WTA, is to “maintain fair competition for all players participating.“

So when the WTA made the announcement, a news outlet, Outsports, which is “concerned with LGBTQ issues and personalities in amateur and professional sports“, took to Instagram and posted the same. The photo they used was of Linda Noskova, the reigning Wimbledon champion.

Upon coming across the post, Noskova dropped, “Why am I here?” in the comment section.

Noskova, who prior to the Wimbledon win had made just one quarterfinal of a Major (2024 Australian Open), has become the third Czech woman in four years to win the title at the All England Club following Marketa Vondrousova in 2023 and Barbora Krejcikova the following season. Noskova beat countrywoman Karolina Muchova in three sets in the final.

Linda Noskova’s father recalls a childhood story about her

After Linda Noskova’s Wimbledon triumph, her proud father, Drahos Nosek, sat for an interview with iSport during which he recalled the difficulties the entire family faced due to lack of money. Nosek and his wife Ivana Noskova divorced from their previous marriages and left all their property to start again.

At first, he had to work as a dispatcher and had to collect scrap metal. When his parents died, the house was sold, and he paid off the debts.

I remember once taking Linda to school, it was March, and there were twenty centimeters of snow. I spent four hours cleaning the court in a completely remote village. At one o’clock in the afternoon, we were the only ones there practicing among the snowdrifts. That’s just how we did it. And Linda never once in her life said she didn’t want to practice… My wife and I gave it our all. For us parents, it was five or six years of giving Linda our all.

Drahos Nosek said

Since Noskova hogged the limelight only after her Wimbledon triumph, the tennis world doesn’t know much about how she is. But her dad shed light on her personality when he was asked if there’s anything that upsets his daughter.

She’s a terrible introvert. If she does, no one will know much about it anyway. A classic introvert. I can’t really see into her soul either, but she’s an incredibly kind and clever girl. She likes all kinds of sports. When we lived alone, we were fooling around, and she would spend three hours shoveling snow from the dam so we could skate.

Drahos Noseka added

The Wimbledon win has helped Noskova reach her career-best ranking of No.7. The 21-year-old will next be competing at the Canadian Open, the main draw of which starts on August 1. The Czech ace made her debut in the tournament last year and suffered a second-round defeat at the hands of Jaqueline Cristian.
