To the shock of many, Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman announced that he has signed a one-year contract extension with Rick Hendrick’s team and would retire at the end of 2027. He would only 34 in the scheduled retirement age, too soon for any drivers in the sport. Many believes issues with his health is the major reason for the announcement, but it isn’t.

The veteran missed multiple races in three of the last five years owing to broken born or vertigo this year. But the No:48 Chevy driver insisted that his health wasn’t the primary reason for the decision, as he insisted that physically he is in a good shape due to the support from HMS via their Athletic Centre.

I don’t think physical health is the No. 1 contributor here in this situation for me. Obviously, I’ve had my fair share of injuries, but I still feel like I can do it, and I think through everything we’ve figured out through the course of this season, everybody helping me in the athletic center with PT every day and everything, I think I’m in a good spot there and can continue doing it.

Alex Bowman said ahead of Brickyard 400.

The veteran decided to step back from the sport because he wants to focus on life beyond the racetracks. Alex Bowman has some life goals he wants to see fulfilled and being a private personal, he wants to live his life away from the limelight. He also asserted that he isn’t stepping back because he can’t no longer race in the elite level and pointed out that he extended his contract because he wanted to prove he still got it, before walking away.

I think for me, much more of it is things I want to do outside the race car, other goals I have in life, and stuff I want to do. If it was straight up that I can’t do this anymore, it probably would have been this year, but I do feel like I can do it at a high level. Hopefully we can go prove that.

Alex Bowman isn’t planning a broadcasting career post-retirement

I don’t know that anybody wants to listen to me on the broadcast, if I’m being honest. I don’t know. I don’t know that I would be any good at that. That looks really hard. The broadcasting thing, I would say some dumb stuff and probably get fired pretty quickly. I can’t believe that hasn’t happened to me in my driving career.

Alex Bowman said.

Later he also highlighted that he has no plans to continue racing, as he would most probably be done with racing once, he retires at the end of 2027 and he wants to go out on a high note. He believes he is in the right spot in terms of physical and emotional strength to pull it off.

I’m just not going to continue racing. I would love to end on a really high note (where) everything goes perfect and we go win a championship and I can walk out that way. That would be amazing (but) that’s not going to make me want to stay. And I think for me, health-wise, mental health-wise, kind of everything, this is what I needed to do that would be best for me and the things I want to do outside of the car.

Alex Bowman added.

The comments from the veteran racer are on point and shows how he feels it is the right decision to move on from racing. It’s good for him both physically and emotionally, despite the fact that he still has a lot to give it to the racing fans. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star drivers in the coming days.
