If Alexander Zverev continues to play with the mindset he had for the French Open and Wimbledon, then he for sure can reach the top of the rankings table, believes former WTA player Andrea Petkovic. Zverev ended his Grand Slam title drought in Paris with a five-set win over Flavio Cobolli.

He then not only progressed beyond the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career but also reached the final, only to lose to Jannik Sinner. His run to the championship clash helped him get back to the No.2 spot, removing Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner comfortably sits on top with 13,450 points. Zverev and Alcaraz have 8,480 and 8,160 points, respectively.

I think that window of opportunity is definitely there. If Sascha continues where he left off at Wimbledon, the chance is absolutely there. Of course, Sinner and Alcaraz will continue to set the tone, so it will be anything but easy. At first, I had the feeling that the old and the new Alexander Zverev were on the court at the same time. The longer the season went on, the more the new style of play prevailed.

Andrea Petkovic told Sport1

Zverev has also admitted that now that he is a Grand Slam champion, one of his main goals is to reach the No.1 ranking. For that to happen, he has to play exceptionally well in big events on a consistent basis, but Sinner also has to lose in the early rounds.

Wimbledon finally showed me that he now completely believes in this game. This is no longer a short-term adjustment, but his new identity on the court. He is more mature, more robust today, and knows very well which path he wants to take.

Andrea Petkovic added

Zverev lifted the first title of the season at SW19. Before that event, he made just one final, in Madrid, which he lost to Sinner. Sascha will next be seen in action at the Canadian Open.

Jannik Sinner on the legacy he wants to leave behind

Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Canadian Open. Which means only one thing: he missed a chance to complete the Golden Masters (winning every Masters 1000 in the same calendar year).

He has a winning streak of 34 matches thanks to his wins in the first five Masters 1000s of the season (Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome). He completed the Career Golden Masters following his win in his home event, becoming only the second man in history after Novak Djokovic to do so.

The Wimbledon title was Sinner’s sixth title of the season. His win over Alexander Zverev made him the 10th man in the Open Era to defend the title.

Sinner recently gave an interview to Il Secolo XIX during which he talked about the legacy he wants to leave behind.

I’m only 24 years old; it’s not easy to answer this question. Beyond the results achieved on the court, I would like people to remember me for the type of person I am and for the values that my parents have transmitted to me. Maybe someone also remembers me because they had fun watching my games.

Sinner withdrew from the Canadian Open for the second consecutive time. He is next expected to feature at the Cincinnati Masters, where last year he couldn’t defend his title, handing the walkover to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. After Cincinnati, the five-time Grand Slam champion will compete at the US Open, which he won in 2024 but lost in the final last year to Alcaraz, who hasn’t played an event since the Barcelona Open due to a wrist injury.
