The NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway witnessed another iconic performance from Corey Heim, as he secured the second with of the 2026 season for the No:67, despite being a part-timer. He took advantage of the 23XI Racing cars extra pace and solid strategy to hold the lead in the last 31 laps to be crowned the Brickyard 400 winner.

He seems to also have gotten under the skin of long-time rival Carson Hocevar, who flipped the bird at the Toyota drivers during the cool down lap. Their beef goes way back to their chaotic Truck Series battle two years ago. Talking to TNT Sports post-race, Heim didn’t hesitate to take a dig at the No:77 Chevy driver.

I handed him a big fat ‘L’ after that…You guys sure love to talk about a guy who finished ninth.

Corey Heim told the media post-race.

Before the smug response from Corey Heim, the Spire Motorsports driver himself addressed the situation and joked that he was just waving at the race winner. Carson Hocevar also highlighted how he is looking for the day he has a better car that would help him produce a better and till then he has to live with a fact that his arch-rival running part-time has more Cup wins this year than him.

I’m just a fan. Wanted to wave at him. He’s number one. He won…His stuff is super fast, obviously. With the car he’s in, he does a really, really good job with it…I’m looking forward to when we get our stuff a little better, being in front of him and maybe holding him up.

Carson Hocevar defended himself over the controversy.

Corey Heim cherishes the Indy win while crew chief brands him as the biggest Cup talent

Sunday marked only the 15th career Cup start for the youngster and he already has two wins, with the first one coming at the inaugural Colorado Naval Base. He is only the second driver since the legendary AJ Foyt in 1965 to win at the track by the 15th start and that an elite list her cherishes being part of.

I’m not much of a stats guy honestly. Sounds like it’s a pretty good one. Definitely cool to be included with a guy like that. Been a crazy year so far. To win two of my first 15 is something I never thought I would accomplish, but here we are. It’s a crazy feeling.

Corey Heim said.

Despite the fact that Heim is part-timer, his crew chief Bootie Barker firmly believes the youngster is one of the biggest talents of the sport, more talented that some of the veteran in the sport. The youngster has the mentality as well as work ethic of a champion, alongside the talent and that’s something a only a handful claim they have.

I think everybody thinks I’m always joking but he’s more talented than everybody else. That’s almost a disservice to some of the great drivers here (but) that’s not the case. Like all the people we were racing at the end are the best of the best, tremendous. Show much respect to them but Corey is there in talent. Corey is also there in work ethic. He’s there as far as a mentality. He has all that now. That’s no guarantee going forward, but right now he has it.

Bootie Barker said.

The comments from the veteran and his young racer shows how the 2026 season so far has gone according to their plans. They have the perfect opportunity to build momentum and a team dynamic ahead of the 2027 season that would mark Heim’s full-time debut, as he will replace Riley Herbst who is really struggling in the third 23XI car.
