When LeBron James signed an $8 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, no one batted an eyelid. That is because everyone knows he is a billionaire, and his income from other sources far exceeds any salary an NBA team can give him.
As the only active athlete to become a billionaire, James has been revered for his eye for investments, while also spending as little as needed. That is crucial considering there are numerous tales of professional athletes becoming broke after spending all their career earnings on luxury items.
But to get to this level of wealth, one has to know business well. The four-time champion did not grow up with much, and neither did his close friends and business partners. Then where did they acquire this knowledge that made them one of the richest people in the country?
He said, ‘We own the rights to basketball in India.’… IMG was the consultant on IPL… Because IMG is agents…they took a fee… But the IPL was worth, at that time, I don’t know, $10 billion. IMG owns nothing. We want to build a basketball league in India.
Maverick Carter revealed to Boardroom
Maverick Carter revealed how former IMG CEO Teddy Forstmann showed them how big a brand can be. The latter, through their experience with the Indian Premier League, a cricket league in India, realized that they could build something as big as that.

When then-NBA commissioner David Stern declined to work with IMG, Forstmann turned to offer LeBron James a partnership to create a basketball league in India. Even though that did not materialize, lessons from that taught the four-time champion and his friend vital lessons that helped them build generational wealth.
Maverick Carter details LeBron James’ businesses
After talking about how that meeting with Teddy Forstmann changed their view about business, Maverick Carter then explained how LeBron James‘ businesses are divided today into three ‘pillars.’
Partnerships. Some of them he has had. Nike, obviously, 23 years… Beats, he is still a partner… He’ll do that forever… Then there’s our company Fulwell… We have The Shop, we have Mind the Game. It’s a full production company… Then there’s LeBron and Mav, our investment portfolio.
Carter revealed
The St. Vincent-St. Mary alum revealed that his former high school teammate has endorsement deals with Nike and Beats for his lifetime. That, and the multiple other deals, power the first aspect of James’ wealth.

Then there is the production company Fulwell, which helps produce shows such as The Kardashians and the Grammy Awards, and is even inked to produce the opening and closing ceremonies of the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
Finally, the investment company, where Maverick Carter and LeBron James are partners, is the investment arm. That company is what invested in The Fenway Sports Group and multiple other avenues. Combined, these three pillars have enabled the 22-time All-Star to become an active billionaire athlete.
Best friends Maverick Carter, LeBron James, and Rich Paul operate independently
Once Maverick Carter clarified how LeBron James’ businesses are structured, Boardroom’s host asked him why the two never thought of combining their work with best friend Rich Paul.

It never made sense from a business structure to put the production company with the agency… Obviously, we’re best friends. So conflicts come up anyway. But there was always conflicts. It would have been too many at the time. Now things have changed… We never thought about having to put it together.
Carter said
This was Carter explaining how, as friends, there was bound to be disagreements, especially when they were young. Therefore, to enable each of them to do their bit, all three did what they felt was best for them.

However, the trio still did a lot of things together. Combining both methods, they have been able to amass such wealth, something that is unheard of for people who come from that background.
