The Los Angeles Dodgers are having a problem while closing games once again. On Thursday, relief pitcher Edwin Diaz blew another save as his side suffered a 5-4 loss against the Milwaukee Brewers. This development sparked some wild reactions from fans.

The two-time defending champions have been in a slump in recent weeks. After snapping a 7-game losing run, they lost another series as the Arizona Diamondbacks took 2 out of the 3 games against them.

It seemed they were back on track following a series sweep of the Kansas City Royals. On Thursday, they took on the Brewers at Dodger Stadium.

A 3-run home run by Max Muncy in the 6th inning saw the Dodgers take a 4-2 lead. This home run saw Muncy become the all-time home run leader at Dodger Stadium with his 131st blast.

With a 2-run lead, manager Dave Roberts gave the pitch to Diaz. The former New York Mets star, who has returned from an injury, has struggled in recent times.

Once again, the pitcher had a tough outing. After striking out William Contreras, the right-handed pitcher gave up 4 singles, which saw the Brewers tie up the game at 4-4. He then struck out Gary Sanchez before being replaced by Alex Vesia.

The Brewers then took a 5-4 lead with a single from Jake Bauers. The Dodgers were unable to come back from this and suffered another loss and missed the chance to tie the best record in the NL.

For Diaz, this was the third blown save in the last week. The pitcher has just been unable to get his side over the line and has struggled in his closing pitcher role.

The NL West side used 5 relievers on Thursday after Roki Sasaki gave them 6 innings. While speaking about this defeat, Dave Roberts claimed that using this many relief pitchers and losing was costly.

However, the 54-year-old will stick with Diaz for save situations. When a reporter asked whether he could be removed from his closing pitcher role, the Dodgers skipper expressed that the team does not have any other option.

Give me another option. I can’t just say, ‘Change to lower leverage.’ I have to have other options, and to be quite honest, none of those guys really are throwing the baseball great.

Dave Roberts said regarding Edwin Diaz

After the loss, Diaz’s ERA jumped up to 11.57 for the season. In 14 appearances, he has just 6 saves with a 2-2 record. Last year, he had 28 saves in 62 games while pitching with a 1.63 ERA.

The Dodgers (73-49) are now 2 games behind the Brewers (75-47) for the best record in the NL. They can tie them if they manage with back-to-back wins.
