Pete Alonso was left stunned on Wednesday when the MLB umpires ruled out his potential go-ahead home run against the New York Yankees as a foul. Fans on social media were left furious with this decision and slammed the officials for it.
Alonso, the former New York Mets star, appeared to have put the Orioles in front in the bottom of the 7th inning. With 2 outs and the scores leveled at 3-3, the right-handed hitter crushed a ball down the left field line.
It appeared that the ball stayed fair. Just as the fans got off their feet and started to celebrate, the umpires ruled it foul. Alonso was left shocked midway as he had started his trot. In the Orioles dugout, several members shook their heads at this big call from the officials.
A crew chief review would follow up. From one angle, the ball seemed fair. Even the broadcasters expressed that the ball looked fair and to be on the right side of the pole for the Orioles.
However, the MLB’s Replay Operations Center in New York did not find enough evidence to overturn the call. The umpires thus stood with the call of foul, and Alonso was denied a potential go-ahead home run. This would have been his second home run of the game, having already smashed one earlier in the 3rd inning.

This angle, which is closer to right down the 3B line, is what contributed to the foul call on the field being upheld by MLB’s replay center.

Once the call was confirmed, Camden Yards erupted with loud boos. Unfortunately for Alonso, he would not get his 2nd home run of the game and ended up striking out.
The Yankees went on to put 2 runs in the 8th inning and took a 5-3 lead. The O’s were unable to muster another comeback and lost the game. Had the home run call stood, things could have turned out differently.

I don’t understand how MLB has replay systems and can’t use them properly even if the video footage is completely obvious

Umpires need to be fired.

An embarrassment for MLB, but no surprise. Anything to help the Yanks win MLB will do. Been that way forever.

Even some Yankees fans argued that the ball was fair and took aim at the MLB’s replay center. Some would say that the visitors got a lucky break.
Pete Alonso calls for use of technology to determine home run after being denied a huge moment
Pete Alonso had a lot to say on Wednesday after his potential go-ahead home run was deemed a foul. In the post-game interview, the “Polar Bear” urged the league to use some sort of technology to determine a home run.

At the moment, the MLB has an ABS Challenge System which the players can use to challenge a strike call. Every team gets 2 challenges.
The system uses optical tracking cameras and a high-speed data network to verify and determine the exact location of the pitch. Alonso wants the MLB to use similar technologies for home runs as well.
We could easily have a laser or a camera that shoots straight up. … I think having a camera or laser shooting straight up, we have all the technology, analytics and whatever and funds. I don’t see why we can’t do it.

The consequences of this call could have been way bigger had it taken place during a postseason game. While having a technology to determine home runs would be a great addition, there could be some challenges given the unique dimensions of the 30 ballparks in the MLB.
Some would also argue that the Orioles did not respond well to the adversity. The hosts had only 3 hits in the game, with 2 of them being solo home runs. With this loss, they were left with a 61-66 record.
