After experiencing some highs in his debut, George Lombard Jr. is going through some lows at the moment. On Wednesday, the youngster committed an error for the 5th game running. This led to him being trolled on social media.

The New York Yankees have had some defensive issues in recent years. The team has made several errors, which have often cost them games.

Among these, the shortstop position is one where they have struggled the most. Before Lombard Jr., Anthony Volpe was having a tough time in this position.

The former round one draft pick made several mistakes in this position. His repeated failures led to fans attacking him and urging the team to find a replacement.

Earlier this month, the Bronx Bombers sent down Volpe and Jasson Dominguez to Triple-A and called up Lombard Jr. to the major leagues. The 21-year-old shined in his debut with some impressive defensive play and a home run.

Since then, he has made a few more top plays in defense, which brought out cheers from the Yankees fans. However, in recent games, he has started to struggle as well.

On Wednesday, he made another error. With the Houston Astros trailing 3-2 in the 7th inning with 2 runners on base, Christian Walker hit a ground ball. Lombard Jr. was unable to field it as the ball bounced off his glove.

Jose Altuve came home from third base and tied the game at 3-3. This marked a 5th successive game where Lombard Jr. had made an error.

Fortunately for the Yankees this time, this error did not cost them the game. They put up 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. Eventually, they won 9-3 and improved their record to 75-57.

Following their 9-7 loss on Tuesday, Boone was asked about his form. The skipper simply claimed that this stretch was normal for a young player playing at the highest level.

I feel like over time he’ll be really good at the routine (plays). So I think that’s just a little bump in the road.

Aaron Boone said regarding George Lombard Jr. as per Bryan Hoch

In his first 11 games, Lombard Jr. had 8 defensive runs saved. This made him one of the top shortstops in the league this season.

The Yankees will now have a rubber game against the Astros on Thursday. After this, they have a huge 4-game series against their arch-rivals, the Boston Red Sox, at Yankee Stadium.
