The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season so far has been impressive for Ty Gibbs, as the No:54 Toyota Camry drivers has finally started being as productive as he used to be in the second division in his fourth year in the elite division. He is currently P3 in the championship table, behind Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney, with two wins already to his name.
The TRD driver talked about the remaining eleven races of the season and his championship hopes. He insisted that he has a solid shot at becoming the champion with the speed and resource advantage he has in his favor. It won’t be easy though considering his biggest rivals are his owns teammates.
Some do, but not really. I mean it’s hard for people to understand. I feel like, honestly, that we’ve got a good shot at the title. I’m excited. It’s going to be fun the next 10 weeks of the playoffs. Besides the speedway stuff, we’re really solid everywhere we go for the rest of the year. I’m looking forward to capitalizing on going back to tracks we’ve been to already this year and getting better at that.
Ty Gibbs said about the chase.
One key thing Ty Gibbs needs to take care this upcoming week at Daytona in his title chase is the momentum, as the youngster didn’t think he had the momentum on his side at New Hampshire. The ley positive though was the fact that he was able to secure a P6 finish, something he has consistently done throughout the season.
I definitely think we’ve got a lot of momentum right now. Last week at New Hampshire we didn’t really have a great weekend, and we were still sixth. There is typically a lot of consistency there. Hopefully we can keep it rolling into the Chase. You know it feels good to see the hard work paying off. It just feels good to be able to be competitive. I’ve kind of known the whole time that I can do it.
Ty Gibbs added via RACER.
Further talking about the point, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver pointed out that he needs to stay upfront more in the coming races and he is working overtime in the sims to do exactly that. The input from his crew under the leadership of Tyler Allen has played a key role in them cracking the code to how to be successful in the sport.
Just kind of looking back from last year and seeing what I can do better from those previous races and just stay on top of what we’ve been doing. We’ve been staying on top of the simulator and trying to maximize it. We have not been changing too much up. My crew chief Tyler [Allen] and everybody that’s been helping my program has been making big gains with our whole deal. It’s been huge. And it’s been a lot of fun, too.
Ty Gibbs asserted.
Ty Gibbs admits he dislikes restrictor plate racing
In the same conversation, Gibbs talked about the upcoming Daytona race that would be really different with the new rule package. He praised the track for producing wild races as well as being historic. One thing he dislikes about the track is the restrictor plates and how it limits the true potential of the Cup cars.

I think Daytona is sick. Obviously, I don’t really like the restrictor plate stuff. It’s just a different style of racing, so it’s like going from supercross to flat track. It can be difficult sometimes, but it’s pretty fun. I respect the Daytona history a lot. That’s the first place where they really started ripping.
Ty Gibbs said.
It’s a unique take from the driver who has never run in the Cup under non-restrictor plate rules. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star driver in the next Sunday at Daytona and in the remaining races of the season.
