Jannik Sinner is all set to make his comeback. At the China Open, starting September 30, the Italian ace will bid to defend his title.

It will be his first tournament since Wimbledon, where he defended his title with a four-set win over Alexander Zverev, also lifting his sixth title of the season. After his successful run at SW19, Sinner withdrew from the Canadian Open to rest and recover, but later had to withdraw from the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open due to a knee injury.

Recently, Italy’s Davis Cup captain Filippo Volandri shared details about Sinner’s recovery in an interview with SuperTennis.

Jannik has already been training for about ten days, progressively increasing the loads he’s subjected himself to. He’s been out of action for almost fifty days, and that’s also why the workload has gradually increased. From the information I have, he’s training and doing well, and he can be as competitive as he’s accustomed us to, even after the interruption due to the clostebol affair, even exceeding his expectations.

Sinner also suffered a physical collapse in the second round of the French Open and eventually lost the match. But before the clay-court Major, the five-time Grand Slam champion won five back-to-back titles at the Masters 1000 events. His win in his home event, the Italian Open, made him the second man in the Open Era to complete the Career Golden Masters.

Because Sinner missed the Cincinnati Open and the US Open, he lost 1,950 ranking points. That’s why his position at the top is now in danger.

Zverev, the World No. 2 and winner of the US Open, is 1,810 points behind Sinner. Sascha first ended his Grand Slam title drought at the French Open after a five-set battle against Flavio Cobolli. Later, he beat home favorite Ben Shelton in the final of the US Open.

When many thought they would finally be able to see Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz‘s names in the same draw, the South Tyrol native ended up withdrawing from the US Open. It was the first tournament Alcaraz played after recovering from the wrist injury.

He was forced to stay on the sidelines for four months after suffering the injury during the Barcelona Open in April. Former player from Italy, Adriano Panatta, is not at all concerned about them, as he is convinced that they will eventually start playing at a high level once again.

The Italians have been doing great things in recent years. And then we have the best in the world at home. As for the US Open, I wouldn’t make a drama out of it. Maybe we were used to it too well.

Adriano Panatta told L’Arena at the A Champion in the Family event

In the New York Slam, the seven-time Grand Slam champion lost in the quarterfinals after a grueling five-setter against Ben Shelton. Alcaraz competed there as the defending champion. He defeated Sinner in the final last year.

Was he missing? He was certainly missed because he would have been the favorite, but if the knee held him back, it’s right that he took his time. He won a lot of matches this year. Carlos Alcaraz was also missing in the best conditions. Don’t worry, they’ll come back, I’m sure. They’re young and will recover quickly.

Adriano Panatta added

Sinner will next compete at the China Open, while Zverev and Alcaraz will represent Team Europe at the Laver Cup. After the team event, Zverev will play in Beijing, while Alcaraz will aim to defend his title in Tokyo.
