Amen Thompson has already established himself as one of the Houston Rockets’ main stars. Drafted by the Rockets as the number four pick in the 2023 NBA draft, Thompson has shown significant growth with every passing season.
He played an important role in helping the Rockets finish second in the Western Conference standings in the 2024-25 campaign. Although they were eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in the first round, Thompson’s defensive performances against Stephen Curry drew plenty of plaudits.
With a lot of hype heading into the 2025-26 campaign, the Rockets were expected to make a deep postseason run after adding Kevin Durant. Unfortunately, they were knocked out in the first round once again this year.
Thompson recently penned a five-year, $205 million contract extension with the Rockets. During his press conference, he was asked if he made any frivolous purchases after signing his new deal. His response got everyone in the room laughing.
First thing I bought, probably some Uber Eats. I get ChopShop. I try to kind of eat healthy. I get a fruit cup. It’s so boring. Don’t order it.

Amen has a twin brother, Ausar Thompson, who was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the same draft class. It is a great time for the Thompson family as Ausar was rewarded with a five-year, $155 million deal a few days ago. They became the first twins to earn $100 million contracts in NBA history.
While most NBA players are known for their lavish spending after signing bumper contracts, Amen preferred to keep it simple and just ordered some food on Uber Eats.
Fans react to Amen Thompson’s first purchase after landing a $208 million deal
Amen Thompson has made it clear that his focus isn’t just money. He wants to help the Rockets achieve their goals, which are to win the NBA championship.
After revealing that he did not make any big purchases and just ordered Uber Eats after his new contract, fans were quick to react to his response across social media.
He's so real

Fans credited him with being real and found his comments relatable. NBA players have gone broke because of their luxurious lifestyles despite making hundreds of millions of dollars. So it seems Thompson is aware of that and doesn’t want to make the same mistake.
Amen Thompson is growing into a vocal leader
There is no doubt that Amen Thompson has the potential to become one of the best two-way players in the league. His physical style of play can go overboard sometimes, but many view him as a Defensive Player of the Year candidate in the future.

The 23-year-old showed significant improvements on the offensive end of the court last season. However, he didn’t make the first or second All-Defensive Team after his maiden All-Defensive First Team nomination last year.
During the Rockets’ press conference, Jabari Smith Jr. revealed that Thompson is becoming more of a vocal leader heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
He’s just talking a lot, putting guys in spots… he’s seeing the game a little different. He’s talk a lot more, even on defense he’s talking a lot more.

After a disappointing end to their 2025-26 campaign, the Rockets will be expected to have a much better showing next season. With Fred VanVleet returning from his long-term injury, a healthy Kevin Durant and a rewarded Amen Thompson, Houston will be hoping to win its first championship since 1995.
