What makes the Laver Cup a special tournament is that players can not only compete without the usual pressure that comes with playing on the tour, but also play alongside their fellow rivals as teammates. Plus, they get the chance to interact with legends of the game, including Roger Federer, who co-created the Laver Cup and played the final match of his career at the event in 2022.

The ninth edition of the tournament concluded in Team Europe’s favor with scores of 13-5. All Team World could win were just three singles matches played by Alex de Minaur, Learner Tien, and Brandon Nakashima.

Also during the tournament, Alcaraz was seen enjoying a special lunch with Federer, the clip of which has gone viral. When Alcaraz was asked what they talked about in a press conference, he chose not to reveal the details about their conversation.

We were having lunch, and suddenly Roger showed up and grabbed a plate to eat with us. I’m not going to say what we talked about, because it was a private moment. I’ll keep our conversation between us, but it’s great.

Alcaraz competed in the Laver Cup for the third time in his career after making his debut in 2024, helping his team win the title. Team Europe lost last year.

I see Roger sometimes when he shows up at tournaments, but it’s not that common to spend time with him on the circuit. So the Laver Cup is special because I can spend much more time with Roger, chat off the court, and ask him about so many things. It’s great, and I love those moments.

Carlos Alcaraz added

Because of Alcaraz’s schedule complaints during the US Open, Team Europe captain Yannick Noah was worried the youngster could end up skipping the tournament. But Alcaraz loves the Laver Cup, saying in a press conference that he is using this tournament “to bring my joy back.“

Andy Murray agrees with Carlos Alcaraz about late finishes at the Grand Slam events

Carlos Alcaraz finished his quarterfinal match against Ben Shelton at 3:33 am local time at the US Open. Alcaraz lost that match and later criticized the tennis bosses for the scheduling, even suggesting that finishing a match at midnight is too late for him.

Andy Murray is also of the same opinion. During his interview with The Times, the Scot criticized the scheduling of the matches not only because of the players, but also because of the fans, the ball kids, as well as the staff.

The late finishes are just nonsense. I said that years ago, and the tournaments said they’ve tried to make changes, and it keeps on happening. I just don’t think players should be going on court at midnight. It’s not just the players. I don’t think it’s beneficial for anybody. You’re supposed to be entertaining people, and normally the vast majority have left the stands.

Murray pointed out that players compete to entertain the crowd, but many of them leaving the stands when it becomes too late. The three-time Grand Slam champion then said that, had he been a parent of one of the ball kids, he wouldn’t have liked them standing so late into the night.

Murray also criticized the tennis calendar, particularly the 12-day Masters 1000s, urging the ATP to change it back to weeklong events, highlighting the fact that several top players chose to skip the Canadian Open after Wimbledon this year.

Back to Alcaraz, he will next be competing at the Japan Open, which starts on September 30. He will be chasing his third title of the season.
