The San Diego Padres fell 0-2 down in the National League Division Series (NLDS) with a 4-3 loss against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. Relief pitcher Mason Miller later got brutally honest about his performance and claimed that he did not do his job.
Ty France, whose potential go-ahead home run in the 9th inning of Game 1 struck the roof and fell into the hands of Jackson Chourio, opened the scoring in the 1st inning of Game 2 to put the Padres in front early on.
With the team leading 3-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning, Miller replaced Bradgley Rodriguez and tried to complete a 6-out save. He struck out Brice Turang and Jake Bauers before William Contreras flew out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 9th inning, Garrett Mitchell grounded out for the first out. Miller then gave up a walk to Christian Yelich, who later stole 2nd base. After walking Sal Frelick, the Padres’ closer had pinch-hitter Andrew Vaughn fly out for the second out of the inning.
Miller then proceeded to issue his third walk of the inning as he walked Gary Sanchez, which loaded up the bases for Jackson Chourio. What followed next was an epic at-bat between two of the best of this generation.
Chourio fell 1-2 down after 3 pitches, swinging and missing. The 22-year-old tipped off a 103 mph fastball just to stay alive. After taking a slider for a 2-2 pitch, he connected on a 101 mph fastball down the middle into center field for a base hit.
This hit allowed Yelich and Frelick to score from 3rd and 2nd, respectively, and lift the Brewers to a 4-3 walk-off win.

Miller, who led the National League in saves, blew the save in this game and suffered defeat. While speaking with the reporters after the game, the 28-year-old took the blame on himself and claimed he was “terrible” on the mound.
Terrible. I didn’t do my job today … The cardinal rule is pretty much: You don’t beat yourself. And I beat myself today.

Mason Miller was asked how he felt: "Terrible. I didn't do my job today … The cardinal rule is pretty much: You don't beat yourself. And I beat myself today. I mean, a base hit with nobody on doesn't win them the game. A base hit after you walk the bases loaded does." #Padres

The series will now move to Petco Park, where every situation is now a do-or-die one for the Padres. If they do not get the right result on Tuesday night, the Brewers will clinch a second straight National League Championship Series (NLCS) berth.
Padres manager Craig Stammen claims the team has a big challenge in front of them after falling 0-2 down
The San Diego Padres are now in a major hole. Their 4-3 loss has put them 0-2 down in the best-of-five division series. Manager Craig Stammen knows his team has a big challenge ahead of them after their defeat on Sunday.

History is not on the side of the Padres. In the best-of-five postseason series, teams that have gone 0-2 down have won just 10 out of the 93 times.
The last time this happened was 9 years ago. The New York Yankees fell 0-2 down against the Cleveland Guardians before coming back to win Games 3, 4, and 5 and advance to the American League Championship Series (ALCS).
Stammen knows his team has to be perfect from here on if they are to reach the NLCS. The 42-year-old, however, is confident about his team’s chances at home.
It’s a big challenge. They’re a great team. You saw how hard they battled us here in Milwaukee. But we like where we are when we play at home.

The Padres will have Nick Pivetta on the mound going up against Dustin May on Tuesday. The right-handed pitcher has a 1.64 ERA in 5 starts since returning from the injured list in September.
