Victor Wembanyama is one of the league’s best players today. He is coming off a spectacular 2025-26 campaign in which he announced himself to the NBA world.

After finishing 13th in the West in the 2024-25 campaign, Wembanyama led the San Antonio Spurs to the second spot in the standings last season. It was their first postseason appearance since 2018.

The French star, alongside his young teammates, reached the NBA Finals. Unfortunately, the Knicks overpowered them and beat them in five games.

It has been four months since the Knicks won the championship. While the Knicks went all out in their celebrations, things were very different for Wembanyama, who entered the Finals expecting to win it all in his first postseason.

According to ESPN reporter Michael C. Wright, Victor Wembanyama has limited his media access this year.

I’m hearing that Victor does not want to talk about what happened in the Finals. He’s locked-in and he’s not even talking to any American media outlets except for 60 Minutes. It affected him in a way. He sincerely believed the Spurs would win, and he sincerely believed the Spurs were the better team. It didn’t go the way he wanted it to, but he learned a lot from it.

Despite Victor Wembanyama’s historic performances during the playoffs, a lack of postseason inexperience did play a factor in the Spurs getting humbled and humiliated on the game’s biggest stage. However, the Frenchman is locked in and is looking for some revenge heading into the new season.

Fans react to Victor Wembanyama refusing to talk to American media outlets

Since getting drafted by the Spurs as the number one pick in 2023, Victor Wembanyama has been destined for greatness. Barring any serious injury, many expect him to cement his status as an All-Time great before his career comes to an end.

While he has the talent and skill to become great, he has also shown the mentality and work ethic to match. With his focus solely on the upcoming season, it is not surprising to know that he has blocked out the American media since the Finals loss. But the news of him shutting them out generated a lot of reactions across social media.

Reports of him avoiding the American media drew mixed reactions. While some supported his decision, since the American media can spin narratives and be brutal at times, others called him out for not walking the talk after his trash-talking in the Finals.

Victor Wembanyama took part in several media scrums on media day

The expectations surrounding Victor Wembanyama and his teammates are very high heading into the new season. While they were expected to beat the Knicks after eliminating the defending champions, Oklahoma City Thunder, in the Western Conference Final, the humbling loss was a huge learning curve for the young Spurs roster.

After Michael C. Wright’s comments about Wembanyama avoiding American media went viral, there were a lot of doubts about whether he would be open to speaking to everyone on media day. The ESPN reporter later revealed that the 22-year-old has done several media scrums and the podcast was recorded before the Spurs’ media day.

Vic’s had multiple media sessions since that time. But during offseason leading into camp and media day, 60 minutes is only US outlet he had done.

Based on Wright’s post, Victor Wembanyama is not shutting out American media on an ongoing basis this season. He was being selective with the media in the offseason, but he has moved on since and is raring to make a mark next season after signing a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie-scale contract extension in the summer.
