The weather has been a major challenge for the NASCAR drivers fighting for the championship since the start of the chase, with multiple practice and qualifying sessions getting cancelled over rain delay. This weekend’s Bank of America 400 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway witnessed the same drama, as the field was set with the use of the metric system owing to hurricane Isaias.

This infuriated Christopher Bell, the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran who was able to secure a P17 slot for the start of the race. He ranted about the system being perfect to set the qualifying line-up not the starting line-up for the race. His rant was more about overall frustration with the system than about him not getting a lucky break.

That *****. Not good. I mean, I’m a big fan of the metric system. I think it does a really good job of– I should say I’m a really big fan of the metric system for the qualifying order.

Christopher Bell said at Charlotte.

In the words of Christopher Bell, NASCAR has a pretty good and fair system right now with the metric. But that doesn’t mean every time there a scheduling issue owing to unavoidable delays, the practice and qualifying can be cancelled.

Because I think it does a really good job of weighing your season performance along with your previous week’s performance. It gives backmarkers a chance to have a better qualifying position, but yeah. I just think that we should be qualifying. We should be practicing. We should be qualifying.

Christopher Bell added, as reported by 5GOATS.

Later during the same conversation, the veteran was asked about potentially having the qualifying on the same day as the race when there are scheduling conflict. He is 100% open to that as he finds it paramount to have an actual session deciding the race starting line-up.

Absolutely. 100%. Yes, absolutely. It’s super important

Christopher Bell asserted.

Christopher Bell hates not having qualifying

While discussing the point further, he admitted that he is okay with even having no practice sessions, as long as there is qualifying. He doesn’t think it is right for the premier stock car racing championship to deicide the starting spots without on track action. The No:20 Camry driver is really passionate about having a real qualifying session.

It’s the NASCAR Cup Series, more so qualifying than practice. Like if we don’t want to practice, that’s fine. But we’re the top level of auto racing in America. Like you’re not going to see other top forms of motorsports to line a race up without qualifying. So yeah, I think that we should put more effort into qualifying, and I’m okay with the metric of lining up the qualifying order. I just think we need to qualify.

Christopher Bell said.

The comments from the star driver are on point and seems reasonable. It would be interesting to see how the sanctioning body and the rest of the garage is going to respond to the demand. If NASCAR is willing to listen the suggestions from the community on the topic, it can be easily solved.
