Josh Simmons’ situation with the Kansas City Chiefs continues to baffle the football world. The Chiefs selected the big offensive lineman even after he dropped down on draft day due to a torn patellar tendon.

The California native started five games at left tackle before being ruled out for weeks 6 to 9 due to personal reasons involving his family. His season ended after he fractured his wrist in Week 13.

Simmons missed the Chiefs’ first five games of the 2026 season. According to reports, he was making great progress, and KC was heading toward activating him from the injured reserve.

However, KC media revealed concerning news prior to the Chiefs’ big showdown against defending champions the Seattle Seahawks. Head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes told Simmons to leave the meeting room.

Why did Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes tell Josh Simmons to leave the meeting room?

ESPN, Yahoo, and other major outlets reported last week on Simmons’ departure. Apparently, Simmons sat with his feet on the bench. Then, Reid told him to sit properly. In reply, the 23-year-old said he sat that way because of his bad back and hip.

The two reportedly argued a bit before Mahomes interjected. The three-time champion told Simmons to leave and get his back checked.

Kansas City Star reporter Sam McDowell asked coach Reid about the alleged midweek disruption on Sunday. The head coach explained the situation.

Listen, Sam, I’ve said so much on him; [Head Athletic Trainer] Rick [Burkholder’s] talked about him — things happen… That’s not the reason he was put on IR. He’s got a bad back. So, he’s got to get that worked out. That’s the main thing. I’ll leave it at that. That’s where we’re at with it.

Andy Reid told the reporter

Who replaced Josh Simmons in the Chiefs’ offensive line?

The Chiefs started undrafted rookie Khalil Benson at left tackle. Benson, an IU alum, has been great at run blocking but has struggled in pass protection. He ranked 28th out of 32 LTs in pressures allowed according to Sumer Sports.

Benson played a major role in unleashing Kenneth Walker in the five games. The reigning Super Bowl MVP had 106 carries for 665 yards (6.3 yards per carry) and 6 touchdowns. Walker also caught 14 passes and scored 2 touchdowns.

The Chiefs lose their first game of the season

KC were favored against the Seahawks in Week 7. Even though Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold threw an early interception, the Chiefs failed to capitalize. In fact, Mike Macdonald’s Seattle defense kept both Mahomes and former Seahawk Kenneth Walker quiet all night.

Mahomes completed 19 of 33 passes for 165 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Walker combined for 57 yards on 18 touches. The Chiefs offense only scored 3 points in four quarters (only the second time a Mahomes-led offense has scored single-digit points).

Per ESPN research, the Chiefs had their joint-fewest points (3), fewest red zone drives (0), and 2nd-fewest yards (213) in any of the 153 games started by Patrick Mahomes, regular season or playoffs.

The three-time Super Bowl winner was pressured on 19 of 36 dropbacks (53%), the 4th-highest pressure rate in a game in his career.

This [result expletive]. You don’t want to perform like this in primetime. You’ve got to feel it on the plane ride home… You’ve got to see your mistakes… and try to play better… and find a way to win next week.

Next week, the Chiefs travel to Mile High to face the Denver Broncos. KC won 31-10 in the reverse fixture on opening day. Mahomes threw 15 completions for 184 yards, 2 touchdowns, and one interception.

In his Chiefs debut, Walker had 23 carries for 173 yards and one touchdown. He also caught 3 passes and one touchdown.
