Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson produced an impressive last run last Sunday at Talladega to win the race and almost guarantee the 2026 championship. The win didn’t come without controversy, as the some believes the veteran’s charge to P1 after getting dropped to P11 from the lead within just two corners involved a yellow-line infarction.

Though NASCAR confirmed that there was no rule breach, there was still criticism. Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr., who already backed Larson amidst the drama, discussed more about it in his Dale Jr. Download podcast. Since the time of Covid-19, Junior has been asking NASCAR to change the rule book regarding the yellow-line.

So, during COVID, we were doing races in Charlotte at the racetrack in the booth there at Charlotte for weeks, and this came up during one of our races at Talladega. And I said then, I think we should get rid of the rule. We’re not going to tear up less race cars or more race cars, and I do think that it might be time for them to revisit the spirit of the rule.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said on his podcast.

He highlighted how the likes of Kyle Larson and Austin Hill should not be penalized for the on-edge infarctions, as they didn’t earn any advantage on the track with that move. Dale Earnhardt Jr. also came in the defense of Bubba Wallace, who was black flagged this year during the Atlanta race for a similar infraction, despite not gaining any advantage.

Do I have a problem with the 33 (Austin Hill) going below half a car right there? Does that give him some massive unfair advantage to the rest of the field? No. He didn’t even try to do it. He didn’t. He overreacted. Just like Larson. Similar to Bubba at Atlanta.

All this drama and ambiguity around the rule has made him to ask NASCAR to make some necessary changes. The veteran is not calling for the rule to scraped entirely, instead he wanted the sport to make it less confusing and loosen it up a bit, to allow racers have proper dules at the track on race weeks.

Those types of deals to me, those types of deals to me make me feel like it’s time to sort of revisit this, and see if we can’t do this differently… And I’m not sure that right here at this table, I know exactly everything that we should do, but I do feel like that we could certainly loosen it up a little bit, do away with it entirely. I’m not sure.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. asserted.

Later in the same conversation, junior highlighted how NASCAR would have taken away Austin Hill’s win if he had finished ahead of the No:5, owing to the infraction. According to him that shouldn’t happen, as such small infarction becoming the factor that determines the result is not a good look.

I just wish we could figure out how to do it differently to where those situations aren’t determining the outcomes of the race. I hate to think that if Austin Hill dips below the line there and he goes on and wins the race, he won the race. But since we have this rule, it’s likely that they would have taken that win away. And now we’ve got this stinky funk over the whole sport for the week. Even with the 5 just barely putting his tire nearly out of bounds, it’s been this… Here we are talking about it.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.

The comments from the JR Motorsports driver are on point and the situation demands the sanctioning body to make the rules clearer, while also being more consistent with the decision making. It would be interesting to see how the leadership going to handle the controversy.
