The Milwaukee Brewers clinched their first World Series title on Wednesday as they beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5. Following the team’s greatest win in franchise history, captain Christian Yelich sent an emotional message to late great Bob Uecker.
For more than 5 decades, Uecker was the voice of the Brewers. After a brief stint in MLB as a player, he took over as the play-by-play announcer of the Milwaukee-based team in 1971 and called games late into his 80s until 2024.
On January 16, 2025, Uecker passed away at the age of 90. After the Brewers suffered a painful loss against the New York Mets in the 2024 NL Wild Card Series, Yelich was left emotional, as the hardest part for him that night was talking to Uecker.
So with the Brewers finally winning it all for the first time, it was fitting that Yelich would honor “Mr. Baseball.” While speaking with Ken Rosenthal on the FOX Sports broadcast, the 34-year-old claimed they keep him (Uecker) close to their hearts.
He’s smiling, man. I really wish he could have been here to see this. It would have meant everything to him, but we said a bunch, he’s been with us a lot. We keep him close to our hearts, and this one’s still for Bob and still for Ueck. Ueck, I love you, man, and we did it.

The Brewers could have celebrated on Tuesday night if they had held on to their lead late in the game. A go-ahead home run in the 12th inning from Cooper Pratt had them 3 outs away from winning the World Series.
However, the Rays managed to come back following a throwing error at first base. The AL East side recorded 4 singles without an out and walked off their opponents 4-3 to avoid the sweep.
Pratt, who could have been the hero in Game 4, opened the scoring in Game 5 in the 2nd inning with a single to center field. While Brice Turang scored from 2nd base, Pratt got caught between first and second base and was tagged out.
A single from David Hamilton in the 5th, a double from William Contreras, and a sacrifice fly from Pratt in the 6th inning put the Brewers up 4-0. A double from Chandler Simpson in the 9th inning denied them another shutout, but there was no denying them a championship celebration this time.

With their win, the Brewers have now removed themselves from the unwanted list of active teams that have never won the World Series. For the Rays, this is now a third defeat in the Fall Classic in their franchise history.
Christian Yelich becomes the first Brewers captain to lift a World Series title
In the 57th season, the Milwaukee Brewers finally went the distance and won it all. Christian Yelich, who is one of their longest-tenured players, became their first captain to lift a World Series title.

While the team has had some great players in their franchise history, they operated without an official captain until recently. Manager Pat Murphy named him the captain during the final weekend of the regular season.

When asked about his feelings about being the first captain to lift the title, the former National League MVP claimed it was one of the craziest feelings for him.
It’s the first Milwaukee Brewers team to be champs, So I mean that’s the craziest feeling, and I know the city was hungry for this, and it meant something to people.

The city of Milwaukee will party hard tonight, and the celebrations will continue for a while. Speaking of the World Series for a bit, this is the third straight year that an AL East team has lost in the Fall Classic. Some tough luck for that division.
