Despite not having the best season, Garbine Muguruza has made it till the very end courtesy her experience. After getting knocked out of the third round at Wimbledon, she reached the fourth round at Flushing Meadows. She then won the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic and followed it up with a quarterfinal outing at Moscow.

This week in Guadalajara, she started with a tight three set loss to Karolina Pliskova. She then defeated Barbora Krejcikova in the next match despite being a set down and followed it up with a victory over Anett Kontaveit. In the last 4, she blasted past fellow countrywoman Paula Badosa in straight sets 6-3,6-3.

As for Anett Kontaveit, she has had a dream second half of the 2021 season. After bowing out of the third round of US Open, she won the Ostrava Open and also made it to the quarterfinal at Indian Wells. She then won the Kremlin Cup at Moscow and followed it up with another title victory at the Transylvania Open.

She started her campaign at Guadalajara with a convincing win over Barbora Krejcikova and then defeated Karolina Pliskova in straight sets to make it to the semifinal. She then lost to Muguruza in her last group stage match. In the semifinals, she got the better of Maria Sakkari in three sets 6-1,3-6,6-3.

This will be the sixth meeting between the duo. Muguruza leads the H2H 3-2. They last met a couple of days ago in the group stage of the WTA Finals where Muguruza won in straight sets.

Kontaveit has had a dream run and will want to end it on a high note. But Muguruza is the only player who has defeated her this week. Having said that, the Estonian will come better prepared this time and is expected to topple Muguruza and win the title.
