“Fake World No.1!” Tennis Twitter SLAMS Iga Swiatek after her unexpected loss at the Canadian Open

Top seed and French Open champion Iga Swiatek lost to inform Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in the Round of 16 of the 2022 Canadian Open. She lost to Hadda Maia in three sets 4-6,6-3,5-7, which is also shocking given that she was on a 37-match winning streak just last month. The Brazilian was playing very well before Wimbledon but lost her opening round matches in the last two tournaments she played.

Swiatek, on the other hand, was on a 37-match winning streak and had won 6 consecutive tournaments including the French Open. She was the favorite going into Wimbledon but shockingly lost in the third round to Alize Cornet. In the Poland Open too, she lost in the quarterfinals to Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia.

This week at Toronto, she had a solid win against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round where she won in straight sets 6-1,6-2. But she looked very monotonous in the third round against Haddad Maia and eventually lost in three sets. This is the third consecutive tournament where Swiatek hasn’t managed to win three consecutive matches. And this is concerning as she was playing so well just a few weeks back.

Fans on social media were very shocked and upset with Swiatek’s recent form. They questioned her No.1 ranking and claimed that such an inconsistent player shouldn’t hold the top spot in the women’s ranking.

Swiatek will now play the Cincinnati Open next where she’ll be the top seed again. Her performance over the last few weeks has been very average and hence she would desperately want to do well at Cincinnati to get the momentum for the US Open.
