Borna Coric was having a difficult 2022 season until a potential Cincinnati Masters title was on the horizon. Coric’s performance in the Western and Southern Open was a sight to behold. He has defeated top-seeded players like Rafael Nadal, Robert Bautista Agut, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Cameron Norrie to reach the finals.
After suffering from numerous injuries throughout the year, Coric found his form to perform well at the Cincinnati Masters. The World No. 152 became the second-lowest-ranked Cincinnati semi-finalist since the start of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings in 1973.
Coric credits hard practice sessions for his miraculous performance at Cincinnati. He lost the first round of the Canadian Open to fellow Croatian Marin Cilic. Following his performance at the Western and Southern Open, Coric said, “I just came [to Cincinnati] and I just started to serve very good.”
He further added, “I took that risk with my shoulder. I can never know how much I can serve but I just took the risk and I was practising really hard.” This stands true considering Coric has significantly improved his service game with a stunning display of high first serve win percentage. Coric showed amazing baseline play and ground strokes in his match against Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Coric had easy service holds and made sure to keep the games short. A combination of these tactics got him to the final. In addition to this, the Croatian has enhanced his defense. Coric displayed his resilience in Cincinnati as he defeated two top 10 players in a single tournament.
