Jannik Sinner will end up losing his No.1 ranking this year because he has prematurely ended his 2026 season to continue to nurse his knee. The Italian hasn’t competed since defending his Wimbledon crown by beating Alexander Zverev in July.

It’s World No.2 Zverev who is going to be the newest World No.1 as he trails Sinner by 1,280 points in the live rankings. Sascha capitalized on both Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz‘s absence and early exits in Majors to take home the French Open and the US Open.

Sinner won 44 matches this season, losing just three. He took home five Masters 1000 titles in a row, winning in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome. The win in his home event made him the second man in history to complete the rare Career Golden Masters.

Me, together with the doctors, have decided that I need a course of treatment on my knee, which means that the 2026 season is officially over. The last couple of years, especially the ending in Turin, gave me so many beautiful feelings and emotions, which this year is going to be different.

Jannik Sinner said on social media

After those back-to-back wins in Masters 1000s, Sinner suffered a shock second-round exit at the French Open after suffering full-body cramps.

But at the moment, I also need to think about my long-term career. I will do everything possible to get back to 100 per cent. I will thank you in advance for your support and hope to see you very, very soon on court again.

Jannik Sinner added

Before announcing his decision to end the season, the World No.1 withdrew from the Cincinnati Masters, US Open, China Open, as well as the Shanghai Masters. He was the reigning champion in Beijing, and now he will be unable to defend points in Vienna, Paris, and the ATP Finals.

Jakub Mensik sends a warning to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

Many in the tennis world have tipped Jakub Mensik to challenge the dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Mensik is also confident that he has it in him to do so as well as win Grand Slam titles.

Definitely. I have this mindset. Since I was a kid, I always wanted to win Slams and to go for it. And even like you said, when Carlos and Jannik are healthy, it’s really, really tough to play them. But since I’m here in the top 20, top 30, and I’m getting a little bit closer, step by step, I’m trying to follow their steps, the work, what they are putting in.

Jakub Mensik said on Stella ATP Perfect Serve Podcast

The Czech ace holds a 1-0 head-to-head record over Sinner, defeating him in the quarterfinals of this year’s Qatar Open. He has never faced the seven-time Grand Slam champion.

I proved myself in Doha this year that I can play against Jannik. It was something that I was like, ‘Okay, well, let’s test where I am, you know?

Jakub Mensik added

Mensik was last seen in action in the round of 16 of the China Open, where he lost to Francisco Cerundolo. Alcaraz didn’t play in Beijing and instead competed at the Japan Open, where he successfully defended his title by defeating Jiri Lehecka.

In the Chinese capital, Novak Djokovic received the walkover from Alex de Minaur in the final and won his seventh consecutive title in his seventh appearance in the tournament. Except for Sinner, all of these players will next be competing at the Shanghai Masters, the main draw of which starts on October 7. Valentin Vacherot will be playing as the defending champion.
