Cheerleaders are very much part of the NBA games, and they don’t fail to attract the attention of the NBA players and the fans. Gilbert Arenas is certainly one of those players. In a recent interview with VladTV, Arenas admitted a few inside stories about the cheerleaders that NBA teams hire to perform during the NBA games. He also added that Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks have some of the best looking cheerleaders in the league.

According to Arenas, in the NBA there are only a handful of teams like the Heat and the Hawks that have good-looking cheerleaders. “There’s only a few teams that got good enough cheerleaders that you wanna take serious,” Arenas said. “You got Miami, Atlanta,” Gilbert added. Arenas admitted that some of the teams call a timeout to watch the cheerleaders perform on the floor. “No one’s calling a timeout in Utah to look at the dancers. Miami, (Heat) you’re calling timeouts just to look at the performance. Like, ‘Oh, hold on y’all, timeout, let’s look,’” he added.

The former Wizards star also said that certain teams select cheerleaders based on their dancing skills, like Los Angeles Lakers. If he is to be believed, certain teams hire cheerleaders just for their looks and dancing doesn’t matter to the organizations at all. However, it might not be completely true looking at the fact that teams in the league have really talented dancers that come on the court during timeouts to perform for the fans.

While Arenas said that the physical relationship between cheerleaders and the team players is a normal thing in the league, he also admitted to having some himself. When asked if he had any relations with any of the cheerleaders, Arenas said he had messed around with a few of them. Even if certain teams prohibit relations between employees, the former NBA player said, players are not employees because they have contracts. Moreover, Arenas doesn’t think NBA teams care about such relationships.

While NBA players earn millions of dollars from their contracts, according to former All-Star, even cheerleaders also do not shy away from establishing relationships with players. “Let’s just be honest here you are paying her 200 a game…come on…if I want to take her out to dinner, you really think she is gonna say ‘oh no I want to save my 200,” Arenas remarked. Perhaps Arenas remarks are controversial and objectify the image of cheerleaders. They are not just eye candy for the players and the fans, they play a very much part in hyping up the crowd and boosting the team.
