“Every time I am in a rush!” Reigning champ Rafael Nadal lashes out at umpire during 2023 Australian Open second-round match

The legendary Rafael Nadal was visibly upset with the chair umpire regarding towels at the extreme ends of the court. Down 4-1 in the opening set, an angry Nadal complained about the shot clock. The Spaniard’s Slam defense shockingly came to a halt against world No. 65 Mackenzie McDonald in three sets. However, it was Nadal’s antics during the changeover that sent Twitter into a frenzy.

Fans expected Nadal, who is known for his comebacks, to stage once more and advance to round 3. But his American opponent made sure that wasn’t to be. With his tournament coming to an abrupt end, rumors are rife regarding Nadal’s potential retirement. Sentiments of disappointment, sadness, anger, and surprise were evident on his supporters’ faces.

Despite of winning the Australian Open last year, Nadal wasn’t the overwhelming favorite heading into 2023. His determination & willpower were on full display in the third set. But his injuries severely restricted his movement about the court. Consequently, Nadal couldn’t take a single set off Mcdonald and bid farewell to Melbourne in a disappointing fashion.

Nadal’s glorious career has been flooded with moments of brilliance. But on multiple occasions, he has drawn the attention of his rivals for his lack of respect for the rules. People were furious at Nadal’s behavior with Lorenzo Sonego during their encounter at Wimbledon last year. With the tennis superstar having flirted with retirement in recent memory, this could’ve very well been the Olympic champion’s last tournament down under.
