Another week of golf action, another complaint of slow play. The passage of play in golf has become a major issue in the past few weeks. This week at the Mexico Open, golfer Aaron Rai made headlines as he took a while trying to make a 15-foot putt and slowed down the play.
During the Farmers Insurance Open in January, the speed of the game was down by a huge margin. The final group of Harry English, Andrew Novak, and Aldrich Potgieter, took over 3 hours to complete the first 9 holes. They trio eventually wrapped up the round in 5 hours and 29 minutes.
This led to a fierce reaction from analyst Dottie Pepper. She would slam the final group for this and urged them to have “respect” for their fellow competitors, fans, and the broadcasters.
The PGA Tour were then reported to be working on implementing some fines and taking action for slow play. However, as of now, nothing has been introduced.
During the recent Mexico Open, English golfer Aaron Rai found himself battling it out against Brian Campbell and Aldrich Potgieter for the title. At the eighth hole, his shot would fall just a few feet away from the pin.
Rai would then go on to use the AimPoint method. He would take a few steps to the hole, then back up to measure the incline. It took him over 2 minutes to make his putt. To make matters worse, he missed the putt.
This is insane. 2 minutes to take a 15 foot putt.

You need to watch the whole video to understand how horrible this is. Words can’t describe the cringe.
This is 100% on the PGA Tour. They could stop this tomorrow with a one stroke penalty.

Rai would make a bogey on this hole and finish the round with a score of 67. He ended the event 18-under par and finished two strokes behind the co-leaders Campbell and Potgieter, who played a playoff round to determine the winner. Campbell came away victorious after a lucky break and took home $1.6 million from the $7 million purse.

Golfer Aaron Rai became the talking point on social media for all the wrong reasons on Monday. His actions during the final round of the Mexico Open and the slow passage of play have gone viral on the internet and has led to many people thrashing him.

On X, several users called him out. Many once again urged the PGA Tour to take some action against this while some again pointed out the implementation of a shot clock. Meanwhile, one angry fan wrote, “Aaron Rai should be kicked out of pro golf for this“.

Watching Aaron Rai play golf is joyless. He has no creativity or flair. He treats golf like a science, not the art it truly is. Seeing him tuck his chin with perfect posture on every shot, while wearing 2 black gloves legitimately makes my eyes hurt https://t.co/TdPmS9drgr
I quite like Aaron Rai, but this is fucking ridiculous. Needs to be shot clock https://t.co/oyAs6S5DOI

Shot clock fixes this. Go over, 1 stroke penalty and a kick in the balls.
— Grumps (@GrumpsCrypto) February 25, 2025
Shot clock and if you get a violation then you lose a stroke.

ban aimpoint putting and limit players to two practice swings

I’ve been around the PGA Tour for decades, dating to 1974, and this might be the worst I’ve ever seen. Hand out penalty strokes, and perhaps it will stop. Aaron Rai should be ashamed and embarrassed and maybe suspended since he is a repeat offender. https://t.co/XGiqivVaiw

The AimPoint method is one of the most debated techniques in golf. A few weeks ago, former major champion Lucas Glover urged for the ban of this move. Collin Morikawa, who is among many of those golfers who use this technique, would defend it and throw a shade at the veteran golfer.
