Matt Fitzpatrick found himself in contention on Sunday at The Players Championship following a slip-up from Ludvig Aberg. While he did not win, he was subjected to heckling from the crowd at the TPC Sawgrass. After the event, the Englishmen trolled the fans for their effort.

For most of the competition, Aberg seemed in control. The Swedish golfer was leading the tournament by 3 shots at the 10th hole. It was at the 11th hole where things went downhill from him.

His shot on the 11th hole would find the water. He proceeded to make a bogey on this hole. On the next hole, Aberg found the water again. This time, he made a double bogey and went from even par to 3-over par within 2 holes.

Aberg’s collapse opened the doors for Fitzpatrick and other chasers. The 2022 U.S. Open winner would later find himself battling Cameron Young.

As the two of them fought for the title, the crowd at the TPC Sawgrass at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, would go hostile. As Young, the American golfer chased his second win, the fans would start heckling Fitzpatrick.

Eventually, the Englishmen finished 1 shot behind Young. This turned out to be just the second win of Young’s PGA Tour career.

During the press conference after the round, Fitzpatrick was asked about his thoughts regarding the crowd’s reaction towards him. He would laugh at this incident and urged the fans to up their game while comparing it with the crowd reaction at the Bethpage Course in New York during the 2025 Ryder Cup.

Listen, the crowd, that was literally child’s play compared to Bethpage. If they think that that was anything, then they need to reassess. Get yourself up to New York.

Matt Fitzpatrick told the reporters

The 31-year-old golfer was part of Team Europe that defeated Team USA at the 2025 Ryder Cup in Bethpage. During this event, he and his teammates were subjected to severe heckling from the New York crowd.

Rory McIlroy received most of it. Some of this heckling even crossed a few lines. After PGA of America President Don Rea expressed that he did not hear any abusive comments towards McIlroy, Fitzpatrick slammed him.

The European star called Rea’s words “offensive after the executive claimed Team USA faced similar heckling from European fans in Rome during the 2023 event.

Matt Fitzpatrick claims first top 3 finish on PGA Tour since 2023

Matt Fitzpatrick is finding his form again. Despite suffering a heartbreaking loss at The Players Championship, he did something that he had not done in over two-and-a-half years. He picked up his first top 3 finish on the tour since 2023.

While the former major champion did have a few top-5 finishes in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, he had not been in the top 3 since the BMW Championship in August 2023. That time, he finished T2 in the tournament.

Fitzpatrick did win last year. In the DP World Tour Championship, he kept his cool and took down Rory McIlroy in the playoff round. That was his first competitive win since the 2023 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in October.

As a consolation prize for finishing as the runner-up at The Players Championship, the golfer did receive $2.7 million from the $25 million purse prize. He will now hope to continue this good form and make a huge push in the major season with the Masters Tournament taking place next month.
