LIV Golf officially filed for bankruptcy on Tuesday. As the breakaway tour prepare for a new era, they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New Jersey. On Wednesday, Rory McIlroy delivered a blunt assessment regarding their new model.
It was in April this year when LIV Golf suffered a huge blow with the withdrawal of financial support from the Public Investment Fund (PIF). The sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, which had invested over $5 billion in LIV Golf, decided to pull of the plug on them.
Since then, CEO Scott O’Neil had been working on securing lead investors for the future. Last month, the league announced a new lead investor and their transition into LIV Golf 2.0. Under the new model, the tour will have 10 events (5 team signatures and 5 team majors).
In a letter to the fans on Tuesday, the league revealed that they had filed for bankruptcy. They also announced some intended changes for the future including an increase in field size to 75 and introduction of a cut feature.

On Wednesday, McIlroy took part in the Irish Open pre-tournament press conference. Ahead of this title defense this week, the Northern Irishman was asked about this thoughts regarding the new model.
The former World No.1 expressed that LIV Golf 2.0 looked less attractive financially then before and warned that they could lose some key players following the bankruptcy filing.
LIV at the start looked a lot more attractive than what LIV 2.0 might be from a financial standpoint. I’m not trying to predict the future but I would predict that you’ll see some guys leave, as they are free to now as, I guess, contracts have been breached by them filing for bankruptcy.

Previously, McIlroy was one of the huge critics of LIV Golf. While he has softened his stance a bit and has been open to LIV stars returning to the PGA Tour, he has taken some shots on the breakaway tour.
Rory McIlroy makes honest admission about his recent performances ahead of Irish Open title defense
Last year, Rory McIlroy vowed the crowd in Ireland with his playoff victory at the Irish Open. As he prepares to defend the title this week, he made an honest admission about his recent performances.

This year has been a mixed one for McIlroy. In 14 starts, he has 6 top-10 finishes and only 1 win. That one win however, was at the Augusta National.
Following his incredible victory in 2025, McIlroy successfully defend the Masters Tournament title and went back-to-back. He became just the 4th player after Jack Nicklaus, Sir Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods to win this major tournament in successive years.
His best finish after this tournament came at the BMW Championship last month where he finished 3rd. A week before this, he had a disappointing showing at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis where he finished 66th.
While speaking with the reporters, the 6-time major champion admitted that he played poorly in Memphis and expressed that he did not like his swing.
I played Memphis and played very poorly, and was looking at my swing on video and just didn’t like where it was.
