Former NFL star Pat McAfee is on his way to the TPC Sawgrass. On Tuesday, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp invited the analyst and sports talk show host to The Players Championship in 2027. This development did not sit well with golf fans on social media.
The ex-Punter is an avid fan of golf and has spoken about the sport several times. On his Pat McAfee Show, he has hosted several top names in the world of golf.
On Tuesday, he had Brian Rolapp on his show. This appearance came after the new PGA Tour Commissioner held a press conference and revealed a new season-ending playoff structure from 2028.
During this appearance on the show, Rolapp also addressed the situation regarding LIV Golf stars aiming to return to the PGA Tour. With the breakaway tour set to usher in a new era, there are some speculations that they could lose some of their top names.
While speaking on this matter, the 54-year-old claimed that anyone who wants to return will have to earn their way back. He also revealed that the PGA Tour will have discussions with those who demonstrate that they are no longer under a contract.
"I don't know what's going on with LIV and we've been clearly focused on the @PGATOUR..

Those guys that are under contract I don't know when they're not gonna be under contract..
If they can demonstrate that they aren't under contract then we can have a conversation"… pic.twitter.com/EYXZKRRUPg
After this conversation, McAfee got invited to The Players Championship. Rolapp urged him to come down to the tournament and assured him that the PGA Tour would take care of him.
Listen, Pat, I want you to come down to the Players. We’re going to set up something for you. Anytime you want to come, come down to the Players Championship. We’ll take care of you. You can put your set anywhere you want.

The Players Championship is one of the biggest events on the PGA Tour. It is hosted annually in March at TPC Sawgrass located in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
While it is a signature event, many dub this as the unofficial “5th major.” At $25 million, it has the highest prize purse of any PGA Tour event, even higher than the 4 traditional majors.
Golf fans left angry with Pat McAfee getting invited to The Players Championship
Pat McAfee getting an invitation to The Players Championship was not well received by golf fans. On X, several users bashed Brian Rolapp for this move.

Fans were not happy with the appearance of Jason Kelce and Kevin Hart during the 2026 Masters Tournament. Many raised their voices against this.
After McAfee got an invitation, many pointed this out and questioned the decision of the PGA Tour. One user took a cheeky dig at LIV Golf and wrote, “PGA is turning into LIV.”

Please leave golf alone. I know you don’t want to hear this, but you’re worse than Jason Kelce at Augusta. Much worse.

After the interview, McAfee and his crew floated the idea of setting up a broadcast crew on a floating set next to the pond near the 17th hole. Known as the “Island Green“, the 17th hole is an iconic par-3 hole consisting of a long green with a tiny bunker in front of it. As it is surrounded by water, it is estimated that around 100,000 balls are retrieved from the pond every year.
