The wrestling world stood still when Sting entered the ring for the very last time in his 40-year career. He defended the AEW tag team titles with Darby Allen against The Young Bucks at the AEW Revolution. Many of the legendary wrestlers and his dear friends were present in the arena to watch the Icon wrestle for the very last time.
Sting and Allen finally won in a fantastic yet brutal tornado tag team match to retain their tag team titles. After they won, The Icon gave a very emotional speech, with his sons paying tribute to him for coming out as his old versions of Surfer and Wolfpac. Not only that but AEW co-owner Tony Khan himself came out to congratulate Sting on his illustrious career.
The match started with a lot of chaos, as his sons even got involved in the match by beating up the Young Bucks. Allen and Sting both went to extreme levels as the 64-year-old received a brutal powerbomb through a table. It was Allen who stole the show, as he jumped off of a ladder and crashed into the glass, destroying his back.
The match took more twists and turns as Sting’s old rival and one of his best friends, Ric Flair played a role in the match too. He covered up the Icon to prevent The Young Bucks from a further beating. However, the Bucks showed no mercy to the Nature Boy and superkicked him with another legend, Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat.
It was certainly an emotional moment for Sting, as two weeks ago he revealed that his father had recently passed away. After the match, the 64-year-old legend gave a speech and thanked the audience for supporting him throughout his career. All the AEW roster with Tony Khan gave him a standing ovation, as he said goodbye to wrestling, forever.
AEW World Tag Team Titles to be vacated after Sting’s retirement
Sting and Darby Allen defended their AEW Tag Team titles by defeating the team of Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson. However, with the Icon’s retirement, wrestling fans wondered about the status of the titles. Finally, Tony Khan broke his silence on it after the show.
The AEW co-owner announced that after Sting’s retirement, the AEW World Tag Team titles will be vacated. There will be a new tag team tournament to determine the new champions later this month.
Many tag teams will look forward to this tournament, like the Young Bucks, FTR, and the Lucha Bros. It will be interesting to see who will be the participants in the tournament and win it to become the new tag team champions.
