“I don’t hunt for rebounds…” A’Ja Wilson takes cheeky dig at Angel Reese

Las Vegas Aces superstar A'ja Wilson broke Angel Reese's WNBA rebound record

When Angel Reese came into the WNBA, every current player and analyst knew her rebounding would shine. It did as she ended up racking up enough to set the single season record for rebounds in league history. But that record did not stand for long as Las Vegas Aces superstar and MVP frontrunner A’ja Wilson overtook the rookie in her last game.

When she sat during the post-game press conference, a reporter asked her about the record. After being initially confused, just as her teammate Kelsey Plum was, she asked what record it was. To this, the reporter confirmed that it was the single-season record.

That's cool. I don't hunt rebounds, you know? So, it's not something that's always on my mind. But when it comes to just getting the basketball for my team. I mean, I'm 6' 4" and around the basketball. I hope I can grab a couple of rebounds for my team. I'm not focused on that. I'm focused on putting the ball in the hoop.
A’ja Wilson replied

A’ja Wilson did acknowledge that having her name in the record books is a blessing. But she reiterated that she does not go out onto the floor hunting for rebounds. That is because her primary focus is on scoring. She has been doing that quite well this season becoming the first WNBA player ever to score 1000 points in a season. The fact that she managed to set the record for rebounds in a season adds to the fact that it is second nature to her.

Her head coach Becky Hammon had a similar view that Wilson does not go hunting for rebounds. Something that has been the narrative surrounding Angel Reese when she piled on the numbers and set the record.

Angel Reese has to develop her game to be acknowledged as one of the best

This was Angel Reese‘s rookie season. That brings a different type of spotlight that may not be around in her latter seasons. So, if she does set a new record next year, fans might not find it to be as impactful if her shooting woes continue. Her lack of scoring efficiency is costing her team a lot of points.

With her offseason set to start after her operated wrist heals, she should focus all of her attention on improving her scoring. Even if she can take a decent step and return to her college averages, her scoring will improve a lot. That could help her team return to the WNBA playoff fold next season.

It will also go on to keep her name among the ranks of the best players in the league. In the situation she does not improve her scoring, she is in danger of losing out on future All-Star nods. With another generation of college players coming through, competition for those places will tighten.
